SO I finally got some help putting the motor back in my frame because I wasnt strong enough to do it solo. Got all excited and started putting her back together, got to my rear tire and realized that somewhere along this multi-month build I managed to lose my spring and gasket from the final drive assembly. Anyone know the exact part for this? Is there a certain spring I can find at a hardware store or is it very specific? Can I use that liquid gasket crap? I wanna get on the road so badly lol the idea of waiting for more parts to come in the mail is disturbing to say the least lol Thanks in advance for any help. Maybe Chacal has the parts I need?

Just incase I dont know the correct names of the parts im talking about this is the location of the spring and gasket I am needing.

and here is a progress pic. [IMG]
Nothing is mounted (seat etc) just sitting on the frame so I can get an idea of what kind of set up im going to have to make to mount it. The weather is finally nice and im itching so bad to get it on the road! I hope someone can help me out!

HCP9348 OEM final drive housing OUTPUT OIL SEAL, fits on the output bearing housing. This is the very large oil seal that IS visible when you are looking at the final drive housing when it is removed from the wheel. For all XJ650, XJ700, XJ750, all XJ900RK, RL, N/FN, and F models, XJ1100, and XS1100 models. Each:
    $ 16.95

found this, sounds right. But no mention of a spring anywhere.....does a spring really go there or did I read my Haynes wrong?

The part you've posted is for the assembly exiting the crankcase and bolts to the drive shaft. The parts you need are listed in the catalog in the tranny and transmission section.

Yes you are missing a spring. There is no gasket between the final drive housing and the swingarm. Unless you tore apart the final drive you won't be missing any o-rings either.

Yes there is an oil seal, but it goes on the final drive input shaft (behind the big castellated nut). The flanges bolt up metal to metal.

Which model is it? Yeah, buying a moded bike can produce a lot of headaches. I'd get a manual and write down everything that's missing and or has been modified.

Plastic on the forks? What forks are on it? The stock forks have a rubber doughnut that sits on top of the air collars, but yours don't seem to even have the air collars on them.

Are the air collors the long plastic sleeve of sorts? Cause they are there. To my knowledge other than me chopping off the rear and painting stuff it's a bone stock 81 650 midnight maxim

Ahhh Midnight Maxim. Yes you do have plastic sleeves, but no air collars.
There is a guide and a gasket that goes on the upper fork tube above the plastic sleeve. Yours are not installed.

Next time take pictures before you disassemble, then bag and tag every part and put them in boxes that you label according to what assemlby the parts came from. It makes putting everything together much easier.

They may not have been there when you bought the bike, but they were there when it left the factory. Chacal should have them.

I agree completely. There so much missing on this bike the previous owner neglected it. Kind of sad. At this rate with parts still needing to be ordered I'm never going to ride this summer lol

Just think of all the summers of trouble-free riding you will have once everything is in order.
    Play the long game.
