Sorry for this topic, but what what is the required torque for the allen head bolt that holds on the timing advancer? My friend's supplementary service manual doesn't list it, and he's too cheap to buy a proper factory service manual o_O. The bike is a 1982 XJ750.

I'm talking about the allen bolt in the middle of the advancer. Thank you!

I'll look it up when I get home this evening if nobody gets to it before then. 7.2ft pounds springs to mind, but it might be a tad higher.

The book says, "...and tighten to specification." The book does not give a value other than the general value for that size fastener (10 foot pounds).
I would put a medium strength threadlocker on it and torque to 7.2 ft pounds.

    Sounds good, thanks.

What's with the valve clearance service intervals on these bikes? My friend's manual says every 5k miles, and the proper clearances are so narrow with a range of only .05mm! I thought this was a Yamaha, not a Ducati!

Checks are to be done every 5,000 miles, but adjustments are not always needed.
Valve check interval frequency from most often to least often.

Screw and locknut (generally every 2,500 miles on most motorcycles, but more often on motorcycles that have exposed valvetrains).

Desmodronic (generally every 3,500 to 7,000 miles depending on model)

Shim over bucket (generally every 5,000 to 6,000 miles depending on manufacturer and engine type).

Shim under bucket (checks generally every 5,000 to 7,500 miles with as much as 25,000 miles between adjustments (I have heard of greater intervals between adjustments)).

    Hydraulic (self adjusting).

Then there's the FJR, with the break-in check at 27,000 miles, and many saying that no adjustments are needed.
