One of the damned screws in the center of the speedometer fell out, and is now just bouncing around in there when I ride. SO ANNOYING.

So I ask, does that screw hold in anything important, and is it easy to pull the clear cover off the top of the speedometer to put it back in?

    Thanks all.

Thanks moe, I didn't see that. The bike is going to be down for a while for new tires, bearings, brakes and valve check so I might as well tear it apart then. It looks like the outer ring comes apart pretty easily.

I just fixed that on my 550. Except the screw was on the tachometer side. The speedometer had a dead spider in it.

Well, it comes apart easily IF you take your time. If you rush, you'll screw it up and have to buy a new unit. The outer ring is formed around the plastic housing. It is not just attached by screws the way other xj650 units, (or the 550 for that matter).... put together. Read though that tutorial which I wrote, and if you questions, feel free to ask me.
