So, I snuck the bike out yesterday and took a 25 mile ride. Still is smile producing. It won't always idle properly, but off idle it rides exactly like I remember. The boost gauge seems to be much jumpier. Used to stay pretty stable until I got on boost at about 5800 RPM indicated.

Wonder if there is an air leak or vacuum leak someplace...could be the cause of the "need a little choke to run right" issue.

There are ZERO starting problems. It starts up every time with no issues at all.

Could just be an idle screw issue or just needs to have some tanks of fuel run through it.

Any ideas what to check and how?

    Thanks,

    Rich

Start with the valve clearances before you cook one.

I wouldn't be too quick to jump into carb adjustments if it's been sitting for a while. Get that old fuel out and some nice new 93 octane burning for a bit and see how it is then.

As Fitz says....make sure those valves are nice and loose on startup. Mine sounds like darned can of marbles on startup then quiets down once it gets warm....then it's time for turbo boosting!!! When I built mine last year or the year before, I made sure all the valves were at the loose end of the specs since they will wear tighter.

just cleaned out the carbs, changed the oil and put in a fresh tank of high octane.

    runs great when warm.

still needs a bit of choke to run properly. no choke....can't get rpm's and will likely die at idle.

am getting a bit of smoke from the bottom of the bike....that's slowing down though!

    help!!
