When I take my bike out of neutral into 1st gear the bike jumps a bit whilst the clutch is engaged.I am wondering if this means the clutch is going bad or what? While in 1st with the clutch engaged the bike doesn't move until i let the clutch go.It jsut moves when shifting into 1st from a stop.i hope this isn't a serious problem.Any help would be appreciated.

Try adjusting your clutch cable a few turns tighter at the lever.
There should be about 1/4 inch of free play ar the lever before the clutch cable begins to pull.

yea, i would say your clutch isn't fully dissengaging. Does it only do it when cold? If so you're probably just breaking your clutch plates loose.

With a wet clutch, its normal to get a little jump when shifting into gear from neutral, especially when cold. It shouldn't be excessive though. Try adjusting the clutchcable alittle.

I think Brian has it - most likely just the wet clutch sticking...it will do it more when cold.

    Toad,

Sounds like you need to tighten your cable up as well.
There should be no drag at a stoplight.

Most bikes have a bit of clunk when going into first. WIth the right technique you can get the clunk down to a minimum.

Basically when my bike is cold I pull in the clutch and Blip the throttle(about 3000rpm). As soon as the revs go down to normal idle immediately engage first.

The blip seems to disengage any "Oil resistance" in the clutch.

With practice I have managed to get it into gear without any clunk or surge whatsoever.

Give it a try and see if it makes any difference.

Correct clutch adjustment is important and if after a few trys you can't get a smooth engage the adjustment may be required.

    Hope this helps

Remember that there is fluid in the wet clutch and with it being a viscous oil bath, some parasitic power transfer is bound to happen in the clutch. Nature of the beast. Mine clunks too (both 81's). Just try to keep the rpms down when shifting and you should be ok.
