I have a 83 xj750 maxim. I came across some vstar mufflers that I modified to put on the bike thinking it would give it a deeper sound, it didn't. So I did some exploring online and found I could drill holes in the casing to give it more of a thumping sound, which also gave it a tiny but of a backfire, I've been told a bit of tuning would help that out. My question is if I decided to run straight pipe instead to give the bike a louder profile, as well as install pod air filters, will I need to beef up the carbs? Has anyone ever ran straight heads on this bike?

You will need to rejet. It is a PITA, and the bike will not perform as well as it does stock

I've heard that a few times about the air filters, does it go the same for straight Pipe though?

Yes. You might be able to get away with only needing to adjust mixture screws if you run a straight pipe with the factory air box, but then you'll still piss off the neighbors.

Can't answer your question in terms of straight pipes or pods; however, I'm running some cheap used Sportster pipes (modded the stock headers after the collector box for a slip-on application) and kept the stock air box and filter. RESULT: louder, but not annoying loud and NO adjustments needed to the carbs.

Think about your mods and what you want to do. And get a hold of sigma 6. Search for the company online. They will give you exactly what you need for your carbs. Also, unless you know exactly what you are doing, find a good mechanic that knows what they are doing and have them sinc your carbs after the mods.

This is kind of what I'm doing now. But the set I have are off a 06 Vstar. It didn't make much difference in sound. I'll have to look into some sportster pipes.

not an expert but a few remarks: others on here made it clear that 1999-04 sportster pipes are what you would want, I believe a crossover pipe was added in later years. Also, the pipes I used are stock with baffles fully intact. I swear it feels like there is a slight performance increase in the mid range! But maybe it is just due to the new sound...

Few months ago I did straight pipes and pod filters. Orders sigma 6 jets off eBay and got it tuned. Sigma sent too big of jets so for no extra cost they sent the bright ones and now the bike runs great!

You can do anything, just takes time and money.
