I'm very recently (this morning) stuck permanently in first gear.

I could repair it temporarily, but I don't have the time or space to tear the engine down and do the permanent fix, so there's an opportunity here to pick up a bike on the cheap. There are lots of good parts, and while I'd be willing to part out, I'd rather just sell it wholesale. Extra parts include some odds and sods: wireset, handlebars, two sets of tanks and side panels (in red and black), custom made crash bars, seat back and rack.

So...anyone want this bike & parts? I'm taking offers! Seriously, what goes around comes around. I'd love to this bike to go to someone on this forum, who knows what to do with it, or can tear it down and use it.

    Bidding starts at $50?

Hey Julie, just came across this note on the "What did you do today" thread and perhaps this might be a simple solution............

"last week tuesday my gearbox wouldnt shift anymore up.

Only first and neutral were available.

Called the workshop i allways go with my bike troubles, the guy over there knew the problem:

Some plastic/rubber nob can break from the shifting fork. and will seat itself in a hole in the shifting control drum (?)

    Solution:

Tip the bike over and lay it (gently) on the right side.
Remove the gearbox lid from the gearbox.

we were able to see the nob sitting in the drum. tryed to pry it out but the nob fell into the oilpan, were it can do no harm, so we let it that way.

unfortunately I was unable to make a picture from that nob.

Within half a hour my bike was running and shifting like new!"

It could also be as simple as a $3 shift pawl return spring which I believe does not require massive teardown to fix, 650 guys?

Very cool guys! Wish I'd got this before I tried driving the flipping thing home, lol.

I'll give that a shot. Even if I get her fixed, I'll likely still sell her. Any takers?

And the verdict is...it is hard to explain but it really is exactly as described, except for the mitigating factor that the drum, or most of it, is behind the bearing, and behind the wall of the main compartment. There is NO access to this area except through myriad holes that the oil flows through. They are about 3/4" in diameter and difficult to access.

My particular piece of junk (pics of which I hope to post shortly) is about 1/2" x 1/2" x 1/2" Once I got it loose (I was able to move the drum a bit by clutching in and turning the necessary piece) I was able to extract the offending detritus using forceps. They worked brilliantly. I lost a very small washer in the process, unfortunately, I don't know where, I'm hoping not inside the bike.

What else? Ah yeah, bikes lying on their sides often get oil fouled sparks (apparently). Change the right ones once you right the bike. Change the left ones too, just for fun.

I haven't managed to turn it over yet, and unfortunately, at last check the gears are still not shifting properly, but they are much better.

This bike is STILL for sale, STILL at $500 obo.

I paid $300 for my parts bike which has the same problem.
I drove it home from about 5 miles away stuck in first gear.
