    How ya doing good ppl,

Just bought this 3 weeks ago with 11 k miles on it imported from the states about 4 years ago. Bike sat in bedroom 3 years then sold to another chap, and left outside for another year. Anyway cut a long story short I've run out of petrol twice and reserve and On positions on petcock not working read possible diaphragm issue so will probably have to refurb as in fitz post as only works in prime position.

Well yesterday after doing research here on possible high fuel consumption, I checked the air filter which happens to be under the seat (does the air box have a filter? If so there ain't anything there maybe not idk) anyway opened it up and lo and behold a thin piece of sponge zip tied to the bottom of the air duct! Well as temporary fix I pulled the air filter out my volvo which is the paper element type folded it and put it in the box a bit tight but has to be better than the sponge till I can get the proper part (anyone know the part number I need for this?)

Today after seeing the post about the brakes, I am tackling the drum brakes and front pads and brake line.

I assume that's the part number for the air filter?

Does the production year which is 10/82 affect the parts needed or is it model year which is 83 according to the vin? Or doesn't matter?

I just purchased this Emgo 12-94400 filter from Amazon and it fits my 82 XJ750J Maxim, and the description states that it fits 81-83 Maxims (although it does not specify the Midnight Model). This is also a paper type filter. I am not sure if this is available in your country. They definitely come with an air filter, you should see a raised lip on the bottom of the airbox facing the carbs, and another one on the lid to the airbox. The filter is a half circle with the flat part butting up against the side that faces the carbs, with the rounded portion facing the rear of the motorcyle. Hopefully that is helpful / relevant.

Thanks Gnat, let me get this straight so the box coming off the carbs at the base of the tank is meant to have an air filter? The box that is under the seat next to the battery and under the fuse box also gets a filter or what? I wish I could upload pics but not able to from my phone.

Ahhhh brilliant schematics help considerably, thanks a million XJ550H.

That's great news as part 12 on the schematic on my bike is the one under the seat next to the battery. Fantastic! I was not relishing the thought of pulling out the engine and carbs to get to the airbox to replace the filter.

Sorry, as xj550's schematic shows, there is only the filter under the seat. I was trying (unsuccessfully) to explain how the filter is oriented in the air box, since I don't know that it would be obvious how it goes in there without seeing the old one. I know it wouldn't have been for me, but I'm not the swiftest crayon in the tool box.

No worries mate, thanks all the same, I was just surprised that there wasn't one in the box and some bright spark zip tied a piece of sponge foam on the duct, I suppose it stopped some crap getting in but caused the carbs to run very rich and that could be one of the reasons it's going through juice at helluva rate! Possibly also the petcock only works in prime so consequently flooding the carbs.

you need to rebuild the petcock, if your floats stick you will end up with you gas in the oil overfilling the crankcase. It could just be the vacuum line to tyhe petcock from the carb intake manafold.

Unless it's air filter foam and not just a sponge gas mileage will be terrible and extra gas in cylinder is just as bad. that model of filter should be readily available any yamaha dealer or good spares supplier all 650-750 maxim and seca's (not turbo) use the same one and K&N is YA1650 ( have one in my seca )
Max where in Ireland are you have been there on holiday visiting family and wife while she worked in Dublin for Irish league of credit unions. Many a drunken night in Temple Bar. Possible trip back in 2019 for The Open at Royal Port Rush

A sponge?! Jeebus H. Criminy. Now is the time where you inspect everything. Do not assume that the prior owner did anything correctly.
The Information Overload Hour will guid you through the process.

The EMGO filter mentioned earlier is a good buy, and what I use.
