i am rebuilding my first bike, its 1981 xj650 maxim. I replaced the head gasket because it was leaking oil from around the gasket area and am not putting the engine back together. i didnt take off the camshafts because i didnt want to have to time anything (ran great), instead I broke the chain from the master and got a new link. I put the new link in and peened it and installed the tensioner back in place, but the chain has some slack in it. is this normal??? I believe the tensioner is tightened all the way.

Some slack is normal, 'some slack' is also subjective.
Did you tension the chain according to the manual?
Timing mark needs to be aligned and then loosen lock nut and stopper bolt, tensioner sets itself.

Did you check your valve clearances? Front and rear brakes?

Let me be Captain Obvious for a second: you'll still check the marks on the cams when the timing plate mark is aligned, right? I'd be concerned that the cams would rotate a little in the process. The timing isn't that hard to do, certainly easy to check.

There are some great posts here on what's required to get your XJ back in proper condition (hint: valve clearances, safety check on rear brake shoes). And Chacal (XJ4Ever.com) has parts you can't get from the dealer, better service and a lot of know-how as well.

I agree with the advice given. Imo re-set or definitely check the timing anytime any of the compenents have been disturbed.
