"I had it running to try to charge-up the Battery; but there's no gas in it now, so it won't start. The Carbs will probably need cleaning-up a little bit!"

Not completely rediculous, but should have been a warning of things to come for me. The PO said that my bike should be able to make the trip back home for me (150 miles or so), and then called me the next day asking if I made it home safely or not. He sounded really worried on the phone. lol...

The picture of me solving my rubiks cube, or of my carbs, because I don't think my carbs are his problem. I think that was a fuel problem.

E-bay is great for sayings like....
Bike ran great, so I am parting it out. (Um....ya?)
Only used the part a few times. (Ya, as a hammer)
Tires are almost new. (New to who? they have 20000 miles on them)
Only Lady driven. (Have you seen my wife drive? )
Never ridden in the rain. (From Oregon.)
Most reliable bike I own. (why are you keeping a less reliable bike?)
Never ridden hard.....Super fast! (Self explanatory)
Great beginner bike. (Seen on a 1200cc for sale)

Its not so much what he said, but the little bitty piece of wood he shoved in the behind the choke lever so the enrichment circuit would not close all the way. It drove me nuts till I happened to notice it after I cleaned my carbs.

My first bike, the XJ650J: "Runs great, but needs some TLC"

Needed ether to maybe start, choke to try to keep it running, new tires front and rear, major carb clean (despite having been cleaned), fuse box messed up with fuses that came of out the slots while driving, one inline fuse that wasn't connected properly resulting in ongoing headlight problems ...

But Hey!! The price was right ($500), I learned A LOT and had loads of fun getting it running. It did have only 9K miles, but needs paint. At least the gas tank had been cleaned and sealed.

of course it had been run and still warm when I git there to buy it. Let it cool down on the way home in the trailer and guess what. No start and carbs plugged with dried gas.

I can't complain. My co-worker was totally honest with me. He made me no promises, he helped me re-assemble the bike and getting running so I could ride it home (just up the street). Price: $300.00

I have that and then some in ebay parts and riding gear.

I must have had the PO of the century by the things you guys have said in the past and in this thread. I showed up the bike was dang dusty felt it and it was stone cold. He said I meant to clean it up but didn't get around to it it has been in the barn since last fall. The dust told me there was no oil leaks sweet, he kicked the choke over and it started right away(and has everytime since Knock on wood). He told me the story of the 1st owner gave me an original yamaha service manual, throttle cable(tho he thought is was a clutch cable), 4qts of oil, an oil filter that he bought but didn't change yet. Included the old title the original owner couldn't find when he bought it but later mailed it to him. When asked about the dent in the tank, yup it fell on the trailer. TOld me about it being cold blooded (and it is it likes to be up to temp to run it's best even after a complete clean of the carbs) I did find the #2 diaghpram not seated correctly. But he was very honest about everything. I do need to run back down and show him the bike all fixed up.

The clips on the other 3 were obviously broken - the PO just taped those together. Didn't even bother with wire nuts. What a maroon!

"I just cleaned the carbs, so all it needs is a sync."

Let's just say that after buying a new set of carbs, he was right for that portion. Then there was the overheating problem once it was finally running.

It's running pretty darn good now, so for the price I paid no complaints. I just need to get the cosmetics done and 2nd gear fixed. But I've gotten pretty good at going from 1st to 3rd now.

Besides, it was really about the zen like experience of becoming one with the bike anyway.

That's insane! Using a over-length, rusty threaded stud is just plain foolish.

It should have been treated with something to prevent corrosion, as the electrical resistance through that circuit must be horrible.......

Your fuse box looks great! My whole wiring harness looked like that, no bolt for a fuse, just loose/broken connectors taped to the fuses and floating around in the fuse box, the PO said it ran great a couple months ago but because the battery was bad it wouldn’t start. Talked him down from 500.00 to 300.00 and drove it back over the pass from Seattle to Spokane. I wasn’t too worried if it would run or not because I had an engine with only 1214 miles on it sitting at home. I pulled the leaky oily engine, wiring harness, coils and dry rotted loops off the bike and started putting all the parts I have been carrying around with me for the last 27 years that an ex-in-law made for me when he took my almost new XJ750 Seca out for an unauthorized ride around the block that ended in him totaling my bike. Any way I’m reliving the dream and with all those parts and some help from chacal when my plastic and tank get back from paint I will be riding my almost new XJ750 Seca again. :D

"it doesn't have side covers, they're like $5 on ebay. An you should really get an airbox, I couldn't get it tuned with pods. You can get that for like $5 too" (PPO put on the pods). This is my first bike and project, so I got the sense that like $200 and everything would be good as new. He was right about the pods, although the fact that the exhaust nuts were loose on the right two headers might have made tuning more difficult.
"The rear brake keeps locking up, and I don't know why." Well the wear indicator says the shoes are toast, the pedal was bent and the drum was full of dust (or rust?), especially on the cam shaft.
Still a good deal for a project tho

Well, my PO was also my Dad. He was always full of good stuff.

"Getting a fat woman drunk is like driving a Winnebego with out brakes!"

"You can drink a mean girl nice, you can drink an ugly girl cute, but you can't drink a fat girl thin!"

ME: "Where are we going, Dad?"
DAD: "Up Mike, down Jake's. It's where they have the hottie pancakes." (Never did figure that one out.)

"That's about as f***ed up as a football bat!"

I remember Grandpa rebuilding a carb of an old '50 GMC grain truck. The first thing he did was put a sheet on the floor of the shop and begin tearing the carb apart. I asked him why he did that. He said, "Can't drop nothing." (This is wise advice, by the way)

Thanks for the memories, guys. I sure do miss them.

when i bought my 750, the kid told me:

"Its not a powerful bike, so if you plan on having someone ride on the back you may want to go bigger"

he was right, it wasnt powerful at all......had nothing to do with the fact that it was running on 2 cylinders of course.

The bike idles at 4000 RPM when warm; the intake manifolds are cracked and pretty much disintegrating.

shoot, my PO was my best man's dad, who i've known forever and a day, so he told me everything and then some.
gave me a file with every receipt he'd ever paid, told me where the bike had been serviced since new and get this: when he gave me the keys, the keychain was an ad for the shop who's been working on it, and the keychain is an XJ. i think i feel pretty confident with the work that has been done to this bike.

cylinder was cracked from over torque and the carbs were a nightmare. But for $100 the price was right and I managed to find a cyclinder for $20 on ebay.
