I don;t see where anyones mentioned how difficult it is to replace the horn buttons on the XJ? (1982 XJ650J)

Anyone care to outline the steps required?

    Thanks lads,
    Rich

The aluminum ones from eBay in the other thread look really nice, and fit well. I installed one -- doesn't actually work right, mind you, but I believe that's elsewhere in the wiring. Total time to do the starter button was about 5 minutes. The guy also sells new springs, which is probably worth the extra dollar if yours are looking worn at all.

I can see the spring going bad over the years, but why replace the button??? What happens to the button? Mine still looks fine. What happens to the buttons on these things?

There is a larger lip of plastic that holds the button in the housing. After a while it wears down and breaks off. Out pops the button.

    yes, suck it can/does.

Particularly, if you go to take your road test, and neglect to replace the horn button.

I don't see what all the fuss is about...can;t I just wave my hands if I need to signal another driver??!!
