i think i might have changed the oil for the 3rd or 2nd or maybe first time ever in my bike. shit with that glue out of it, it made a buttload of noise when i first started it up with Rotella 15-40. even tho it quieted down after five minutes running, i still think i should swap the oil out for straight 40w castrol non-syn car oil. think 30w instead? help.

Id drain it again and use rotella again. If the old oil was like glue than you can bet your ass it that it didnt all come out from just opening the drain plug. Getting new oil circulating ptobably freed up more of the old gunk. Also if a lot stayed in there you could be overfilled. Make sure you change your filter as well.

seafoam what? anyway it did quite down alot. maybe the lifters filled up but wait, these don't have lifters! same thing went for my damned rear end!. a total of about a half a cup of fluid came out and it looked like crap too. I still have about a quart of rotella left, i got it at walmart for about $12 a gallon. Oil is the only thing i buy at walmart cause i hate the place. but that was what it sounded like at first, like it had lifters and they were all clattering.

Lifters? Nope. Shim over bucket. Have you checked valve clearances? What other maintenance hasn't been done? Valve noise is a good thing. Tight valves are quiet. Tappy valves are happy valves.

well THATS good news! i dont think any maintenance in the last God knows how long. Almost no gear oil, it did have a K&N filter, but for some reason it had been stabbed with a screw driver about ten times. I filled all those holes with black silicon rtv. it had warped into an arch, so i cut the top and bottom plastic to make it flat again. i don't have any filtering element on the top of my airbox. dont think you need one with the K&N right? i don't know. i popped open the rear wheel to check the shoes, there is only 1/8 inch of pad left. they could be replaced but i was only checking for delamination and they looked good.. my screws on the front brake fluid reservoir are so rusty i am afraid they will strip out or snap the heads off. i'm sure the fluid is toast. i have an impact driver, but not a philips head that small for it. i dripped penetrating oil on them yesterday.

All the Phillips screws on the bike are actually JIS, not Phillips. You can use the impact driver bit on most JIS screws, or modify a Phillips to fit better by grinding the tip flat. Click the second link in my signature and get to reading up on what you need to do before you start riding.

yeah, i read all about the JIS thing in the carb section. got plenty of philips to grind off. A Number one it looks like. right now my bike conked out twice and wouldn't restart for ten minutes each. Was never hot or driven hard. I think i got too much overspray inside the tank when i painted it. i am gonna pull it off and check the new filter and lines and install an inline filter. Hoping like hell nothing made it's way into the carbs. it runs great when its going. but first time it stalled i was almost stopped in a hairpin, and second time i just turned it off and it wouldnt restart. i really want to find the fast idle screw on the linkage maybe, and turn it up a bit. spozed to idle at 1200 right. i am at about 800 now. just went thru your link there and nothing about any hi idle screws. they don't have one? there was a mention of an idle adjustment screw tho.

The idle adjust screw is an easy find. Stand beside your bike, looking at the carbs, on the airbox side (doesnt matter which side of the bike you are on, as long as you look to the airbox side of the carbs) protruding out from the middle of carbs 2&3 will be a knob. The head is maybe 3/4 inch across, and has bumps running the circumference of the knob to help you get grip. Turn that knob clockwise to increase idle (this tightens the long threaded rod that the head is attached to into the throttle linkage which pushes the butterflies open) counterclockwise will decrease idle. The clockwise/counter clockwise is in reference to if you stood behind the bike and looked directly at the knob.

That will only be a temporary fix though, if they havent been already your carbs probably need a good cleaning, bench sync and vacuum sync to finish it off

A shop will not clean the carbs as well as you will. In The Church of Clean.
Also read The Information Overload Hour (link in my signature). Assume that no maintainace was done, and if it was it was done incorrectly. That is one assumption that will save you many headaches.

same product for gas and oil. add it to the oil let it do its work then drain oil and filter with next change. directions on can and online at manufacture.
you can use it for your gas but berrymans or gumout is better for gas treatment.

QUESTION on the SEAFOAM. how much do i put in the crankcase? i obviously have to drain out the same amount first. so....... the whole quart? :)

btw my bike is running AWESOME, like it SHOULD!!! after throwing about $500 on it! I pulled the plugs and number 3 was black but not oil soaked. ala rich. as gummed up as the carbs used to be i can't go by any of the old plugs. the other three were white, not quite tan, so i left them in there. cheap. only $3ea. NGK D3EAs. the top of each plug was rusty. big shocker. i had to wire brush the top of two of them because the threads were oxidized. that makes me worry. Got the idle up. Replaced the one plug. Still haven't gotten the Seafoam but am going to first chance i get. I had a loose valve cover bolt as well. loose enough to leak oil. That's where the oil smell was coming from i hope. i used a 5mm allen and tightened it as tight as i could get it. don't know the torque spec. 3 out of 4 plugs were not in the head tight either. Fixed my petcock problem. i got sunburned riding yesterday, gonna have to get FRIED today. Dont have a title tho. (yet) WA doesn't require Ins. either. I have a plate but it says 2009 on it. So much fun just to put around about 45-50mph around the farm land and the river. Perfect place to ride w/o a helmet!. If i can only find a swimmin hole now! AND my bike doesnt stall out and not start anymore! Hoping the plug and idle adj. stopped that. but still more shaking down to do. Got to lay low w/o a current plate anyway. A street helmet might help!

    Whaaaat, insurance not required?

Theres directions on the side of the seafoam can for measurements to put in. Make sure you read the "oil" section not the "fuel" section

There is nowhere that is perfect for riding without a helmet. Even a 5MPH spill can result in permanent brain injury or death. Please reconsider.

you do not have to drain any oil out to use seafoam. you add 1.5 oz per quart of oil

Well helmets are a personal choice as well as leather or other protection that will prevent sunburn and very ugly scars and expensive skin grafts. I wear a jacket, helmet and gloves no matter what after seeing friends get messed up. Scars are one thing - I'm ugly enough they'd probably improve me but a 100k medical bill tends to cut into the beer money.

If however you want the freedom and experience of riding around in just your speedos then have at it man. This is MERCA and you are I assume at least technically an adult.

thanks. i support helmet laws. will add the 1.5 ozs to my crank case. But google Fir Island, WA. go to images. then you'll see why i can ride w/o a brain bucket. Know that the land has no cities in it. Conway is on the other side of the river by I-5, only street with any cars is Fir Is. Road, and that Skagit City has a population of Zero. also please know i grew up on a bike, with or without helmets. i have fallen going about 30 and cracked them in half, so i know my skull would have fared the same. I've had exhaust pipe blisters and picked dirt out of my skin. I also lived and road in Cali where there is no helmet law and feel fine about it in the right place, going slow. Now, on a freeway or city street or traveling, or going thru the twisties, yeah, i wouldn't be caught dead w/o a helmet. And as far as that goes, i wouldn't own an open face helmet either. full face or nothin. What the hell good is an open face helmet anyway? However, 'Preciate the concern! If you cant feel 100% confident on flat dry farmland 45 mph on your scoot, you shouldn't even get on one. My mentality is i got my first bike license at 14 in 1969. Allowed to ride up to 250cc.s They gave my by unlimited bike license at 15 (one year early cause DMV screwed up my birthday). I owed my one and only Hardly Ableson (56 Pan) at 19, sold it at 20, would never own another. I know the necessity of braking and manuverability! Always had a bike license. Not saying i'm invincible, but i know my limitations.

Ride how you like. One of my favorite old-time motocross riders died from a head injury sustained on his farm. He was riding at a walking pace and his front tire slid out from under him when he hit a patch of mud. I just hate seeing people hurt.

mee too, esp when it's me. haha. i got my rocks off today it was a total blast! it has to be the most beautiful place on Earth. Just awesome. 2.5 hrs with my helmet off. 35 mph. shorts, tennies, no shirt. almost just wearing the Speedos Ribo was talking about. Only maybe three or so bugs bounced off my chest. A couple knats in my glasses. No bugs in my big ol toothy smile i had the whole time. Only passed like ten cars the whole time.

All i can say about that friend and anybody else biffin it, is S it Happens. If you want to liken it to gambling that is fine because i am using loaded dice. Dont make me get jinxed by talking about crashing! It's not like i am doing Rocky the Flying Squirrel of the top of a cliff. Although that is the position i think i will try to be in if i ever have to t-bone a car!

My bike ran perfect for the whole time, then it just conked out again. Just like last time it had about 1/2 of a tank full of 89 octane gas. I thought this level was high for having to go to Reserve. It didnt sputter or anything tho, like running out of gas is usually like. It was an instant replay of what just happened like two days ago when i first pulled my petcock off again. (and dimpled the plunger). Then it wouldnt start again for five minutes. Didn't even try to, just cranked. I am leaning towards maybe i have a vented gas cap and it is clogged full of crap. Seems like still, it took forever to fill the bowls up on Pri. i am NOT a bike wrench! After it took five, i pushed the starter button and it was like nothing ever happened and away i went to fill up and get home. Weird. btw that's Mt. Baker from Fir Is.

i just look at my old helmet with a scar on the back of it the size of a baseball and flat would have been the back of my head . 20 mph attacked by a golden lab as I drove by.
its not always the cars you have to think about. I have missed 3 moose this year so far could have petted their nose as I went by in my car.

i just need my frikken title and i would be happy as a clam. yeah dogs, and not moose here but we got ten tons of Elk! not in my neck of the woods tho. Hey, i am not making a habit out of it, although i have to say it's AS ADDICTIVE AS HEROIN. i guess, never tried it. but driving around w/6 year old plates, moto-x helmet (although DOT and Snell approved), no registration, no ins. i REALLY don't have to do this every day. besides, now my head is about fried from working the last two days in the scorching sun so. bad enough riding WITH a helmet and no documentation! aaaack! ps Fir Island is only about a 8 minute ride from my house along the dike road. I didn't know this before but you can see Mt Rainier from there!!!! Only took 15 years to finger it out.
