1982 maxim 650 issue

hey there

so im rather new to this i have had the bike for 4-5 years
i was riding a few days ago started fine although it does seem to take a little bit to warm up and i need to have the choke on in order to cold start it i was riding for about 20 mins when it started to putter and stale
when i turned it over again it started but no matter how much gas i gave it it would not go about 2-3000 rpms
i was hoping you guys might now what the issue is ..
after a little while it did run normal again but the next day it did the same thing again

When is the last time the valve clearances were checked?
Do you drain the carbs or add Stabil for over-wintering?
Last time carbs were taken apart?

 

Sounds like what Stumplifter is referring to...Time for maintenance. Check and correct valve clearances, remove and perform the "Church of Clean" on the carbs, replace fuel filter, check petcock filter in tank for obstruction (rust,dirt,etc) wet set the floats to spec, bench sync, new plugs, running sync. Then you will have a great running bike again. Don't forget about the brakes...you do need to stop...
