Turn signal relay - cold?

    Just recently I've notices that my signal relay does not function when first running bike (prior to solid warm-up) and again when riding in cooler weather ( 60 deg F or less).

    Turn signal works when held in position but as it slides back to center position it shuts down the signal. However, when riding in 65 deg F plus temperatures it functions perfectly.

    Any thoughts on the relay? I know ........ I know .. ...... just ride during warm weather!

    The factory signal relay has a removable cover. Take the cover off and clean it just as you would clean a points ignition system. See if that helps. You may also want to clean all of the electrical contacts in the switchgear, and the wiring harness (clean the bulb sockets as well). It sounds to me like you may have enough resistance from corrosion to have a large voltage drop when it is cold out, and possibly a battery that is on its way out.

    Did k-moe's suggestion fix your problem? I'm having the same issue here.

    I've not yet disassembled yet ..... so, cleaning should fix but likely won't know until riding time slows down and I get the courage to tear into the thing.

    It takes maybe ten minutes and if you mess it up a generic replacement is $4 at any autoparts store ( you will lose the self canceling with a non yamaha relay)

    Thanks K. Seems every machine screw on my bike is seized (or so it seems) ..... so I will need 24 hrs plus the 10 minutes :)

    Hopefully your comment will help Vampirum in the short term ..... I think I will wait until I start getting cold weather again.

    The relay is on the frame under the fuel tank. No screws need to be removed to access it, or ot take it apart.

    Ahhhh .... I thought it was part of the thumb actuated controller. I'll continue to explore.

    I lied. The Maxim tank might be held down by a bolt (the 650 is, not sure about the 750).

    Yep, the 750 does have a bolt for the tank :) it was the first one I removed and the only one that was not seized. I documented your lie (that was not a lie) so that some day when I do a half lie we will be even.
