Typically the uni slips on very smoothly so...
Check the grease is clean and the splines are not damaged.
The other thing is to lock the back wheel to make sure it doesn't spin while you labour to fit the joint.
    Good Luck!

I the drive shaft back in before putting the rear hub back on. I sit on the left Side of the bike, keep the boot wedged back so I can see, keep a finger at/in the joint so I can keep it level, and slide the shaft in. Rotating and wiggling a tad if needed. But if you don't stabilize the u-joint, it's gonna keep flopping around and you'll never get the shaft to slide in. It only takes a minute or so.

If you're trying to put the whole rear in as a big unit, you're gonna keep fighting with it as you have weight and bulk fighting against you.

Make sure that the snap ring on the end of the driveshaft is free to move. There will be some resistance when you push the driveshaft home as that ring compresses, then locks into place.

Thankyewvurrymuch Gentlemen. I believe the u joint was out of alignment with the shaft. I was changing out the 850 FD for the 1100FD and had to remove the shaft so I could remove the spacer. In addition I murdered the boot in the process.o_O

From an XS? Ya no workie because it's the same ratio (IIRC). Try one from a Venture. Pay close atttention to the placement of the shock mount so you get the right one.
A V-max final drive would be even better (but generally more expensive) if you are mainly looking for fuel economy.

It's been in for 5 years. I was just switching back when it got all sideways. The FD from a 750 or 850 triple takes the rmp from 5 grand @ 70 to 4 grand @ 70.
