    Hello Everyone
I am replacing my head gasket and I noticed that one of my locating dowels is missing. How critical is this part? If possible, I would like help locating the correct replacement part. I already accidentally ordered a wrong gasket set, for a different model xj 650. My bike is a 1981 Yamaha Maxim. I verified using the VIN on the engine. Its a standard maxim, not a 650 J.

Any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you very much.

All of the XJ650 models use the same gasket set. Start a converstaion with Chacal, he has the dowels, and whatever other parts you may need. Since you have the head off this is a good time to replace the valve stem seals as well. That will require a bit more work (removing the valve keepers and springs), but it is worth doing.

Thank you for the reply. I am getting the seals done. Good advice. The machinist is trying to get me to re-surface the head, but I think its good.

I would like to correct you on the xj 650 models using the same gasket. This is not correct. I have ordered a xj 650 J gasket that DOES NOT FIT. You need to make sure to order the correct gasket. If you look in the haynes manual it has 2 different diagrams.

Thank you for your response. I have emailed CHACAL and he gave me the correct parts.

If the machinist says it needs skimmed then I'd trust him. Have him show you where it is not true if you have concerns.

I forgot about the different valve gaskets for the pre YICS engines. I apologise for my brain fart.
