hitachi carbs in 1985 Yamaha XJ700XN-V Maxim X

Ok so here's the deal. I just picked up this bike (1985 Yamaha XJ700XN) for free from my father and it needs a carb rebuild. Now i am aware that the bike originally had mikuni carbs on it however at some point the original owner swapped them for Hitachi carbs.

I also received the original mikuni carbs with the bike however several of the float pegs are broken off, not to mention missing pieces.

the original owner says the bike ran fine with the Hitachi carbs and regularly took it on the highway, however the bike has sat for some time and the brass in the reservoirs has corroded. i've managed to clean the carbs mostly but some of the jets need to be replaced. i did however get it running with the hitachi carbs.

now i was going to just buy the stock jets for the hitachi carb however since i am doing this, i am wondering what else might need to be done to ensure that it performs at its best. perhaps different size jets ext.

Has anyone else done this type of conversion?

 

My understanding is that some Yamahas have Mikuni and some have Hitachi . . . and they came from the factory that way.

Was your father the original owner?
What makes you think you have to replace the jets?
