Hi folks! I'm the newest owner of a 1982 XJ750J Maxim. It's got the stock handlebars (massive billets of aluminum - at least compared to my previous bike's bars) and I'm wondering how to add some kind of electronics holder (think iPhone 4~6 cradle) to them.

I figure I can't be the only person who wants to do this, so if you've already "been there, done that", I'd appreciate some guidance on what works and what doesn't. Thank you!

Thses people http://www.rammount.com have a variety of mounting options, one of which uses a ball-ended bolt in place of one bolt on the bars. You have a few potential clamping bolts that can be replaced in that way without causing any trouble. The other option is to make a monting plate that attaches using the mirror mounts, or that utilizes the lower bar mounting bolts at the triple tree. You could also consider a magnetic tank bag that has pockets for electronic devices.

One more thing. Some of the Maxims came with bar indexing crowns that were cast into the upper yoke, others had them bolted onto the yoke. Inspect yours to see if you have the latter. If yours are bolted on you can replace them with the bar clamps so you can fit tubular bars instead.

Stay away from the ones that have the clamps that squeeze the sides of the phone. Despite having thick foam and a bottom shelf, I had my galaxy clamped i to one of those really tight, phone eventually flew out, but being on an empty road allowed me to do a quick grab as it fell down beside my right leg.... buddy behind me couldny believe managed to snag it doing 80km/hr .... lesson learned

I've been looking at the X-Grip mounts. They look flimsy, but the demonstration videos look good. Does anyone have experience with them?

Yes the clamps on the one in that amazob link look like they grab mich better than mine which was more of a squeeze hold than a grab

Thanks for the suggestion ColoradoDan! I think that might be the one to go with. First I need to get tubular bars . . .

I think the point is so you can use it as a GPS. Right now I just put headphones on and use the audio but that doesn't always work so well. Buds fall out or there's too much wind noise to hear or understand the direction.

I guess clean is relative - for me, saying I'd like to mount her is sanitized and laundered more than A.J. Soprano, Jr.'s college fund, and unfortunately just as likely to happen.;)

I'm sure y'all feel the same - Len, just picture her with an eye-patch.

I still don't get the "selfie" thing..... What's so thrilling about looking at pictures of people looking at pictures of themselves taking pictures of themselves? They're looking at their own phone, too..... Not even at you, the viewer. It's as if they want to show their phone to you. Who cares?!?!? We all have phones that can take pictures.

I'm an old skool mofo when it comes to somethings but paper maps can f***-off. Some things are just better like maps that automatically tell you where you are and how to get to where you need to go. There are however many times I just ride till I get lost and try and find my way home - just for fun.

The holder arrived today and i must say I'm impressed. For the money it's pretty slick. No road test yet but I'm planning on riding around with it tmw - with a piece of phone-shaped-wood in it for the day.

Sorry the photo quality isn't awesome - the only decent camera I have right now is my phone so I had to use the laptop camera

Dave - I can assure you there's a reason why she doesn't have the brain power to take a photo without looking at the phone.

So let's say that your waterproof GPS case isn't (my semi-adventure in Costa Rica made my phone very sad, even though it was in a Lifeproof case). Or that the road you want to take is not on the GPS map. I like my GPS, but always carry a paper map (waterproofed with MapSeal), because even the sun can be obscured by clouds (also my house is actually several blocks from where the GPS map says it is).

Yeah this doesn't fly in the rain - but then I don't ride in it either on this bike.

If I was going to costa rica then I would - (great country btw, wife and I had a week there last year) - but for running around my town and even venturing further a field GPS does the trick. When it doesn't there's always asking people.

Here's the funny part. I ridicule GPS, but only because I'm not smart enough to use it... Had a trip through upstate NY earlier, and I shut off the effin' thing less than half a mile from my house. I did much better with an outdated paper map. Plus, using a handheld while driving is illegal where I'm from, but not reading and folding/unfolding a map that's larger than your vehicle! Also, I trace my route on the map in pencil, so I can check where I've been. Can a GPS do that? Probably, but again, not smart enough to find out. I can retrace trips I took over two decades ago, though. Can a GPS do that? Nope!

Actualy you can record your trip on the GPS and use it to guide you the next time through, or even transfer it to someone else so they can take the same route.

Less of a recommendation and more of a "watch out for this one"...

I picked this one up, and I don't recommend it. The water-resistant screen is so reflective you can't use it during the day very well and one of the zippers already broke on it. On the plus side, the mount is easy to put on and take off and the knob on the mount also fits the bracket for my Garmin. The garmin works as a gps but leaves something to be desired as a speedo. My phone has a great speedo app and gps, but gets hot and has to be in the shitty glare-screen case.

On the plus side, I ordered it on sale, and I feel like I got the money's worth just for the mount for the garmin.
