rt_caliper_before_n_after.jpg Replacing the pads and doing a general clean up of everything front end related... After completing the first side, I noticed that I installed the "support pad/spring plate" upside down, or is it right side up? The plate itself is not symmetrical from top to bottom, so I'm wondering which way is correct? Did the last guy do it wrong? Either way, it looks wrong to me, since it doesn't seem to matter against the pads. Can't tell from the diagram in the service manual.

I don't believe that it matters.

Another out there question. Last week I replaced the front disc brake pads on my '83 XJ550. After I was done, everything is working, but I noticed one of the old pads had a very thin silver plate attached to the back of one of the pads. Is this plate absolutely necessary? I don't really want to taking the front calipers apart again if I can avoid it.

The plate does not appear to be in the parts diagram for the front brakes.

Sounds like a shim, but I'm no expert

It is actually in the factory parts diagram, shown mixed in with the pads and the caliper seals. It IS supposed to be on there, it's an "anti-squeal" shim. It is fitted to the backside of the pad which the caliper piston contacts.

What Chacal is saying is that you need to put it in there.
