Aftermarket Tachometer not responding '82 XJ750

Hey guys,

I bought this speedo/tach unit to replace the Atari: http://www.ebay.com/itm/301380878143?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

And I have tried over and over again to get the tachometer to respond to the engine RPM but it stays at 0.

I have the blue/white from the cluster connected to the Gray wire coming from the Pickup coil on the wiring diagram, and it does not respond.

Any ideas?

 

Im no pro with this but it seems like this is wanting an electrical driven tach, it came with magnet sensors for speed which is awesome but it doesnt compensate for the fact that our tach is mechanical as well IE: A spinning wire inside of a cable running to your tach.....now I could be wrong like I said im no pro and am often wrong so im prepared for the hazing if im not right lol but that appears to me the issue. The wires coming from the atari were purely for lights

 

All XJ750 models have electronic tachometers (as do 1982 and later 650s). The ATARI does a lot more than shine pretty lights. It shines warning lights. Those warning lights connect to systems that need to be bypassed for the bike to be rideable if the ATARI is removed (this has nothing to do with the aftermarket tach not working though).


On to the problem at hand.
On the 750: Black is the bulb ground, Brown is the Bulb feed, Grey is the signal from the #2/3 coil. If your tach does not work with the signal from the grey wire hooked to the gauge's blue/white wire, then either the gauge is defective, or the grey wire has a break somewhere between the gauge and the 2/3 coil.

If the gauge does turn out ot be defective then I recommend you return it and buy from KOSO. You have a knockoff that is made in mainland China. The KOSO gauges are worth the extra money.

hOW WOULD YOU WIRE THESE TOGETHER BEEN TRYING FOR THE PAST 3 WEEKS CANT FIGURE IT OUT. ITS FOR A 81 XJ650 MAXIM

 

I got my replacement gauge in case the one I received was toast, but with the new gauge I still get no response on the tachometer.

I'm going to check tomorrow to see if there is a break in the wire anywhere, but the tachometer on my old Atari worked.. So who knows.

Any other ideas, anyone?

 

Bump... would really like a working tachometer! Even if I have to buy a solo tach!

 

When I was wiring my aftermarket tach, I THINK it was Red (tach) to Tan (bike), Green (tach) to Grey (bike). Blue was for the backlight. The one I got was like this though (on the right, obviously):


I'm not sure if maybe there's another wire on the gauge you got that needs a different connection? I hope that helps, if even a little!

 

I'm going to take a good look at it tonight and make sure that everything is connected and there's nothing I've missed.

Where did you purchase that Tachometer?

Hello I am new to the forum so I really appreciate all the helpful stuff posted on here. K-moe you mention being able to bypass certain parts of the atari for the bike to be rideable. Do you know specifically how on a 1982 xj750 maxim? Anything would help.

As far as I can tell, yes. There is only one ground wire on the entire gauge cluster, and it is grounded properly to one of the bikes existing ground leads.
