So i recently bought my third 1981 XJ550 Seca. I got a screaming deal on it. Paid $500.00 for it and it looks almost new. Out of the three i have bought in the past this one is by far in the best shape. When i bought it i noticed that it needed new carb boots so i ordered them from my work (I am a sales guy at our local honda, suzuki and kawasaki shop). Some how over the week that i had the bike parked waiting for parts i managed to loose my only key for the damn thing. I tore my ignition switch out and ordered new keys using my key # on the bottom (latter learning that i only needed to use a flashlight and a mirror). My keys finally arrived and when i went to try them they did'nt fit. I tried to take my ignition switch apart to see if i could file the key into submission (probablly the most retarded thing ive ever done) and now i can't get the thing back together. Has anbody else ever been dumb enough to take one of these apart that could help me get mine back together again. Any help would be apretiated. Oh yeah, and my battery is pooched now as well. (forgive any spelling mistakes im in sales not administration)

It is a painstaking but possible process. Pictures are of course the best way but it seems you did the same thing as me with my FZR. Just look at the pieces as they fit into the unit and visualize the function of each. It took me about 30 minutes of plug and try to get it right.

I did the same thing as you. Robert is right, set aside an hour or so and take your time - you'll get it back together.

It isn't a quick fix. Good luck.

Thanks Guys. I took a break from it yesterday and then it only took me about 20 minutes to figure it out. Unfourtunatly i have no way of making sure i got it right because i still don't have a proper key.

You can take the whole unit to a locksmith and they can make a key up for you no matter how you assembled the tumbers.

Actually i didn't even get the thumbers out to begin with. I had it stripped right down to that part and couldn't get those out (thank god). I just couldn't remember how to put the actually mechanism together again.

Well then, it's not near as bad as I thought! When I had my ignition apart, it was tumblers and all - an interesting experience to get it back together.
