bought this about a year ago for $300 running but not well. My old man bought me the same one in 87 when I was around 15. Doing a show quality restoration with some subtle mods. I have everything here new for it. I had the original red mixed in base coat. Got killer gray pearl to replace the silver stripe and bought a medium blue pearl to replace the blue stripe. Had all the vinyl done locally. Will clear over everything and sand/buff. Everything including brackets will be painted with automotive urethane paints out of my spray gun. Want it to last and look good for years and years. I removed unneeded crap off the rear frame area and built a smaller seat latch that's more hidden. I cut 2 inches off the top of the windscreen. Just too tall in my opinion. I sanded and buffed it to like new appearance. In some of the mock up pics I have real small turn signals but have sinced changed them out. I went with 97 GSXR ones. They have the basic shape as original but they are in between the stock and shorties on size. I used an H4 diamond cut headlight and modified an S-10 truck headlight bucket to fit in the GPz bucket so its still adjustable. I also removed the horn mounts from the frame. I made a new bracket and mounted one under the bottom triple tree. I have stainless allen socket caps for the side covers on the engine. I had spent a few weeks before strip down getting it running perfectly. It only has 8000 miles on it but it had a rough outdoor life. I bought a NOS instrument cluster surround so the wording for the stand, brights, etc. will be crisp. Also bought a new ignition switch so the lettering is crisp. I'm a perfectionist I guess. Wanting to finish it up in the next couple months and enter some bike shows.

Forgot to mention when I wrote the book above. I had my seat redone in marine grade vinyl with a smaller grain. I also bought a car amplifier wiring kit with same gauge wire for my starter and frame ground. I like details and the transparent shielding gives it a cool look.

I got lucky with my craiglist want ad and bought a parts bike over the winter. Cruising through my local bike salvage a couple months ago, I found a like new drive belt that had "83 gpz305" written on the tag. Got it for $40. These are no longer available so now I have a spare. There is info on the web for chain conversions but I like the smoothness and quietness of the belt. A scrub brush and hot soapy water cleans the belts good. Then I coat them in vegetable oil.

Was hoping to finish it for a rally that's only for pre 1990 and nothing over 501cc. Its this weekend. Going to take my big bike just to go look at all the little bikes and join their club.

I would bet that with a little research, and the dimensions of your belt (including munber of teeth) you might be able to find a suitable new replacement.

Love the thread and what you do to the bike. Have an 85 gpz550 that is my next project. But no mods, just back to (mostly) original.
Where did you find the headlight? Looks great and better than the original.
