get the seller to give you the vin number here is a link for decoding it.
    http://www.xjbikes.com/forums/threads/tech-topic-model-id-and-vins.14577/

also that white tag on the headstock will have the information.

how much does the seller want?

looks like a shaft drive and dual disc brake so it is at least a 650.
it loks like the cylinder is smashed look at the spark plug.

Too fuzzy for me, but the dual discs means it is NOT an XJ650.
Missing exhaust, headlight, controll cluster, carbs and a lot more but it does have the air box!!!!
Should be gotten for real cheap.

Sit tight, one of the Wise Wizards will tell you what it is

I emailed him last night but not heard back yet. Its $150. I was thinking of putting the whole front end on my 82 650 Maxim

it is my understanding you will have gas tank problems with the seca front end and the maxim tank. you will end up with little dents.

also the engine size may be stamped in the front of the cylinders between the center 2 exhaust pipes

That is a 1982 Seca 650 (the only year for the Seca 650 in the US). The seller has it priced right. If it has a viable engine then you'd be better off finding a 650 seca tank and recomissioning that bike than you would swapping the front end onto your Maxim.
