Ok to be sure it's not ign switch or start button unplug small wires (red and blue in plastic plug)to solenoid then try again, that removes them from play. If it does it again it is for sure the solenoid.
You are hooking cables to battery terminals right?
One on pos and other to neg or frame bolt.
have seen ppl go direct to solenoid instead of battery

Make sure the + bolt through the starter casing isn't touching the case. The starter is ground through the case.

Update: my air filter box was full
Of oil... Explains why the engine wasn't cranking ? Got a new battery, left it
On the trickle charger over night. Started bike last night had white smoke coming out of exhaust but it has to be from excess oil/ fuel spilling. Looking around for a new air filter so I don't have to order online.

    ivana,

Do not ever take your bike into a local motorcycle shop, they will not know how to work on these bikes; if they cant plug in a computer to it, they will not know how to fix it........you will gain knowledge here from this forum and will acquire more knowledge about your bike than you imagined........everyone is here to help you........

These are great bikes when running top notch........but requires a lot of time & patience......and sometimes money......

if you have oil/fuel spilling out into your airbox, then your crankcase may be filling up with fuel from stuck fuel floats, or incorrect fuel float settings......open your oil filler knob & smell your crankcase...does it smell like fuel......if so......a drain & re-fill is in order and filter replacement, as well as ripping off those carbs & check the float settings....

Is there no bike shop near you? Any shop can get you an aftermarket air filter like the emgo 12-94400 for all maxim650's. Even an auto supply store can get you a K&N filter ya1650. As far as "on line" Len will get you one faster and no wasted trip or gas. XJ forever is 2-4 days even ordering today you prob see it by Wednesday

if battery is fresh out of the box about ten hours if you are recharging it with the trickle charger as long you can wait. if you do not have enough of a charge the tci will not fire the ignition.
the fuller the charge the more chances you will have to start the bike. low charge 1 or 2 shots at it 50 % to 75% should be your minimum
    100% Charged:
Using a Digital Voltmeter: 12.60 volts
    Using a Floating-Ball Hydrometer: 4 balls floating
    75% Charged:
Using a Digital Voltmeter: 12.40 volts
    Using a Floating-Ball Hydrometer: 3 balls floating
    50% Charged:
Using a Digital Voltmeter: 12.10 volts
    Using a Floating-Ball Hydrometer: 2 balls floating
    25% Charged:
Using a Digital Voltmeter: 11.90 volts
    Using a Floating-Ball Hydrometer: 1 ball floating
    0% Charged:
Using a Digital Voltmeter: less than 11.80 volts
    Using a Floating-Ball Hydrometer: 0 balls floating

is your headlight on when you turn the key or only after you try to or do start bike?

Blowing out old filter?? Was it an oem paper one ? blowing it out probably didn't help a lot ,just wait till new one arrives! And you battery will love the extra charge time

The carbs are critical and specific. Without "church of clean" carbs the bores will never dial in correctly.

If the carbs are no-longer puking fuel into your crankcase then you can use the old filter until the new one arrives (so long as there are no holes in it).

Is an oil soaked paper filter really going to work? Unless it was a foam or K&N style not very well, would be like running with the choke on.

I wouldn't have told him to do it if I hadn't done it myself.

One of the few things that is truely annoying about English; no genter neutral pronouns.

Neither. I only had to run it for a week, so I just left it. The filter didn't pick up enough dust to cause any trouble.
