Took my 83 maxim for a ride yesterday the first one since i finished getting a 32 yo with 3400 miles bike back up to spec safety wise. It has been done about 4 months but just never had the time to take it out. Ran like a new one. When i cleaned the carbs i shimmed the needles and went up 1 size on the pilot . Throttle response is crisp. Got caught up on most of my projects i hope to be able to take it out once a week or so. bike is a little dusty but pics turned out well.

Its nice to ride a bike that you put so many hours in it. I just got my bike going after rebuilding the engine. Was off the road for a few years. But now I can ride all day :0

    Nice!

This is unfortunately the best picture I could find to show it on my photobucket, but if you take the metal license plate back off it looks way cleaner from the back end, I'll try to take a better picture next time I'm out in the garage.

Big project ...... however just read that 1.4 million cars recalled for 'hacking' concerns. However, I've never heard of an '83 XJ being recalled for hacking ................ therefore XJ's are far superior. :)

I've seen plenty of XJs that have been hacked.

So true .... but hard to recall a box of parts or something that no longer looks like an XJ.

    Cutlass,

What do you mean by your post above " I finished getting a 32 yo" & "I shimmed the needles and went up 1 size on the pilot"

On pilot jet from what size to what size did you step up.....& what do you mean by 32 yo & shimmed the needles...???

    Just curious....

    Thanks

32 year old bike with 3500 miles. I went up 1 size on the pilot (got it fro len) and put 2 shims under the needle on the slide. or commonly called the needle jet or pin. (got the shims from len)

what are the purposes of the shims for the needle jet ....to allow more fuel in ????? & and what size did you go to ? Do you remember ???

ok i went with 41 pilots the shims i got were part number HCP14514SET8 put 2 on each needle. Basically the way a carburetor works is you have vacuum going to the carb butterflies in the front of the carb is controlled with the throttle. The plate opens up the vacuum pulls the slide up. The needle works fro around 1/8 to 3/4 throttle that tapered pin that runs down into the tube that holds the main jet. That tapered pin is raised 10o thousands of an inch with the 2 washers on it the taper is now that much higher and you get a little more fuel up in every position that the slide is in now when it gets up to about 3/4 throttle the slide is most of the way up and the tapered shaft is to high no longer in use running off the main fully. What it did for mine is made it start up better and you could shut off the choke and it would idle almost immediately. Roll on the gas and response was much more sensitive . I have to get out there and adjust the mixture screws i synced he carbs and adjusted the mixture screws when it was really cold out. Just have not had the chance yet but i have been laid up most of he summer. If your having lean troubles down low or idling problems this will do nothing. You idle circuit is partially plugged you will need to remove the mixture screws and clean out the idle circuit from the jet side carb side and down thru the mixture screw and use compressed air to blow it out afterwards just when you think it is clean clean it again. Then you need to replace the o ring when you pull the screw out the oring and washer stay in there you will need a pick or small wood screw to screw into the washer and oring to get it out. len has all the parts you need individually also if your having high idle or avacuum loss use a propane torch not lit of coarse run around all the butterfly shaft seals and carb boots and make sure they are not leaking. And you need to make sure your floats are correctly set. If they are to high you will have leaky carbs and have a chance of ruining your motor from raw gas running in if they are to low it makes it very lean carb has a hard time sucking up the fuel. Not sure if you know this will say it just in case you did not. carbs with the air screws behind the the butterflies adjust air into the mixture but ones like these on the front side of the butterfly control fuel into the air mixture If your running pods this set up will not do anything for you that is a whole different ballpark. You more then likely know most of this but i figured i would go over it just in case you did not. Good luck with it
