Removed the tank to check compression. Laid it in a plastic holder, thick end down & thin part up so as to not put pressure on the valve. Gas leaked around the gasket and ruined the paint job I'd put on several years ago. Can't recall the brand of black. Used the two part spraymax 2K clear coat on top but it didn't stop the gas from taking the paint down to the metal overnight.

What is a good matching black rattle can to match the frame?

    Thanks!

If gas gets under the 2k clear coat, it'll dissolve the base/primer coats. It gets underneath where the paint stops...your gas cap. Can even happen if you don't seal down the edge of the paint, I was advised to use clear nail polish on my new paint job.

I don't know if the gasket or gas cap can ever hold back gas that's resting on it, it can deal with fumes but it's not impervious. Also, the petcock is pretty robust, as long as you don't step on or kick the tank while it's resting on the ground you'll be fine (I do it all the time)

    Can't help on the color.

As I understand it a well functioning cap will not [should not] leak when upside down. It's got a little ball-bearing or two that plugs up a venting hole. Mine leaks, and I bought all the stuff to rebuild it, but I haven't done it yet or else I'd be letting you know how well that works.

Take a look at engine enamel paint, these are gas and oil resistant. I used it for my tank

Yeah, the engine enamel is a first thought but I'f like to keep it as close to matching the same reflection as the frame. I might do it differently now, I bought an air compressor with 21 gallon tank yesterday and I really should get a spray gun and use that instead of rattle can. Maybe I can get a better durable paint that way? No idea but I've spilled gas on lots of painted bike & automotive surfaces without it lifting. Maybe it's the baking after painting they used to do with enamel paint that makes the difference? Again, no idea, a painter I'm not.

I did my Kaw tank with engine enamel. It looks surprisingly good but fuel proof it is not. The mark eventually goes away but takes a few days.

VHT is pretty good stuff and goes on nice and smooth, but I'm sure will fail if enough gas gets on it.
