I've been a member for some time now but this is my first post.

Bought an 81 Maxim 550 back in February in great shape with 6300 miles. It was running but needed work as I expected a 34 year old bike would. Thanks to the members posts here (more helpful than my oil stained Clymer), I've cleaned the carbs, adjusted valves, replaced brake lines/pads, etc., etc. Bike is running and stopping better than when I bought it but needs a few last touches.

I'm at the point where I want to colortune now. However, the colortune plug instructions say to adjust the mix screws to get the right color, but the Clymer says the mix screws are set at the factory and sealed.

Anybody done a colortune on these bikes? How did you deal with the mix screws?

Thanks and glad to be a part of this great forum

The screws are sealed with brass plugs that are next to the enrichment plungers. Carefully drill a small hole in the plugs (if your are present) then use a drywall screw to pop them out. Most likely your anti-tamper plugs have already been removed, in which case you will find a small slotted head screw in a well next to each enrichment plunger. Alo, if you cleaned the carbs without removing the idle mixture screws, they aren't entirely clean.

k-moe, thanks. Anti-tamper plugs were still in place. Removed one and started colortune process. I'll keep posting as to how this turns out.
