Chrome Paint

Wondering if anyone has tried chrome paint on any parts? I got ahold of a backrest and its frame is a bit rusted in the back. I can sand and steel wool it out and thought about painting it back to chrome if possible. Ive heard of getting parts "re-chromed" but thought this may be a more DIY method. Any tips or experiences? Just dont want to end up with a cheap looking mess on the back of my bike.

 

it will look like crap. I have never seen chrome paint look as glass-like as real chrome. Get it re-dipped if you really want it in pristine condition. Otherwise sand it all and paint it black.

 

I am a painter for a living, I paint cars, and houses and I can tell you as far as chrome goes the rattle can chrome paint that you get for 10 to 20 bucks at like home depot is crap for bike parts that you want to see yourself in, because it just doesnt come out that shiny. But there is some good stuff out there that can be done yourself if you have the right equipment. It has to be properly primed, colored and clear coated, and baked on at 140 degrees. It is best to get it proffessionally done. If it is done right you can not tell it wasnt dipped (unless it is side by side comparison). The advantage is you can chrome anything including fiberglass. The paint alone cost about $250 a quart but its worth it.

question slightly off topic but close, what would be the process for painting chrome parts? Would you have to completly sand off all the chrome or just a good primer? If so what kind?

 

It looks like Glorified Silver..... I used it on and out of the way piece once and it looked okay, but not for someting as eye catching as the backrest!
