I had trouble starting bike, I thought it was solenoid, but could hear it clicking, thought maybe fuse box, (It is 25 years old) but then I thought it could be tons of dirt on the starter. Kick it a couple times (soft) and it started right up.

I guess I just move the dirt around enough to make it work. Could that be? Time to clean it?

Dirt AND the springs behind brushes could be getting tired or brushes themselves are getting too short.

Cleaned mine a couple of days ago, alot of black stuff everywhere. I suppose from grease working up and through the whole thing. Also, I think some of soft magnet got chewed up and spit all around.

Better be ready to get your hands all coated with black soot. Had hard time cleaning the parts because I couldn't use much solvent around the electrical parts.

Measured all 4 brushes, 7mm. Still have 2mm to go until they hit the minimum of 5mm (for XJ550, might be different for yours).

Am I the only one who read the thread title and thought someone was asking how to hook up a pull starter (think lawnmower-style) to their bike?

    :?

As strange as this place can get, sometimes, I was getting ready to see a picture of some lawnmower part somehow affixed to the motor!

You have to turn green and bust out of your shirt to pull start a four-banger; though.
