I've got a spare xj550 Maxim carb with nice shiny chrome covers (the two outside ones are chrome, two inside ones are the typical dull finish) and I'd like to swap all 4 covers onto my xj650 Maxim carb. According to my internet search results the part numbers differ, but in person the parts look identical. Are they the same form and same bolt pattern?

Parts diagrams details the following models with these carburetor diaphragm cover part numbers:

    xj550H J K (1981-3) Maxim - Cover, Diaphragm 4G0-14958-00-00 & 4U8-14958-00-00
    xj650G H (1980-1) Maxim - Cover, Diaphragm 4H7-14958-00-00 & 4H8-14958-00-00
xj650J (1982) Maxim - (No call-out for the 'Cover, Diaphragm' on parts diagram)

I will be looking forward from hearing from the guys here. What I have been told so far is that the carbs on 550 and 650 are interchangeable. On my search list, earlier, I kept my eyes open for a set of carbs from either/or machine. However the individual parts of the carbs will be an interesting discussion.
I won't call it good advice but you could use the reverse of the OJ method. "if it don't fit, you must acquit". If all the measurements stack up you may be in luck.

550 carbs are made by Mikuni and the 650 carbs are Hatichi. They may look similar and maybe fit. Check inside and depth where the slide spring goes to see if that the same.
xj4ever has the right ones if you are interested. I also like the stainless steel socket head screws to replace the original rusty phillips ones Len has.

They will not interchange, at all, in any way, unless you have more money than God and are willing to spend it on this type of project. The carbs are completely different.

XJ650 (except turbo models) and all 1981-83 XJ750 model carbs will physically interchange (they are all the same Hitachi HSC32 series carbs), but, the jetting and main needle are all different between the 650 and 750 carbs. Those parts can be physically interchanged though.

And that's exactly why I would not even try

You can probably epoxy them on. I wouldn't do that though.
