    Hi gang,
Long time no hear. Nearly 2 years ago my XJ jammed in 1st gear and I had to get a recovery truck home.
So long story short, yesterday I finally got around to checking it out and found the dreaded chunk of hard plastic in the casing but not in the drum. She seems to have freed up now and i can select all gears but now the problem is no spark at all. I did notice that we accidentally split the wiring which tucks in towards the bottom left of the casing which exposed three wires, orange, grey and black. Taped them up but I am making an assumption that perhaps this is the reason I have no spark at all now. I think these wires go to the pick ups but any advice will be great.
    As always thanks .
    Morg.

the black wire is common to both pickups and should not be connected to ground. black to orange and black to gray should be about 650 ohms. unplugged from the tci none of them connect to ground

will bad pickup or mis connected pick up coils cause NO SPARK AT ALL?

Absolutely! If the TCI doesn't receive the proper signal from the pickups, it won't fire the coil to the sparkplug.

Nothing! Surface rust will not cause any trouble, but cleaning the pickup coils might.
Before jumping to conclusions you need to be doing some electrical testing to determine what is going on.

Do you gave power to the TCI?
Do you have power to the ignition coils?
    Is the safety relay functioning?
Test the resistance of the pickup coils.
The list is longer, but that will get you started.

    no power to TCI
    power to ignition coils
saftey relay stopped working all of the sudden and i used a test light and it barely lights up (bad connection?)
pickup coil resistance seems awful in comparison to what a guy on youtube showed

Don't look for advice on Youtube (unless it is a video that is linked from this site).
What was the pickup coil resistance?

How is your sidestand switch? Does it move smoothly? Is it hooked up?

Do you hear a click from the safety relay when you turn the key on?

    22k ohms
there is no side stand switch for the year I have (1981)
the click from the relay used to happened until I started getting low dc voltage output on it (out of nowhere) is there a way to bypass it safely

At this point it would be good for you to start your own thread. The differene in year between your bike and the OP's bike may continue to cause confusion.
