Then you already know the value of having a service manual handy.
There are plenty of model-specific procedures that just can't be guessed at, and that do not respond well to the usual rules of thumb.

Apparently on my phone California (when spelled incorrectly) gets corrected to Canadian.

Gotta love that... Subliminal adds for Canadian tourism!!
Have you checked the weather up here is nuts hottest summer in 60+ years but we are on level 3 water restrictions. No car washing no lawn watering. Shutting down kids water play parks. Average May to August rainfall is 4-5" per month we are less than 1/4 " . Big panic over low river levels affect on salmon runs

The 1984 XJ750RL models used the HSC33 carbs, same as 1985-86 XJ700 airheads, and they do have a bunch of extra hose crap on them!

So should the XJ900's. which k-moe pictured on the first page of this thread.

touch a quarter or a screwdriver across the two big bolts on the solenoid, make sure it's in neutral

something is wrong with the starter or the one wire that goes to it. you've bypassed everything and told the starter to spin, it didn't.

It might just be the starter brushes need to be replaced and the carbon dust blown out.
Check for voltage at the starter when you press the starter button. if voltage is present then pull the starter to inspect it and/or bench test it (a used starter will need to have this done as well. They are over 30 years old and starters do require servicing).
Get thee a service manual. they are invaluable.

With the starter in hand, how should the end gear turn? This one sticks, difficult to turn. Once I get new rebuilt one ill crack this one and do the rebuild on it. No need for a gaping hole in the crankcase.

it will be very stiff, your turning planetary gears with big reduction. clip your battery charger - to the frame of it and hold it tight then touch the + to the bolt
