I am new to this and the starter is the first issue I have had.

Does this look re-buildable or should I try and find a new starter motor...

If so I am having a hard time finding which are compatible with my bike.

Just get another starter. Any xj650 or xj750 will work. I think the xj900rk is the same starter, too....

There's loads of used parts here, and you can always contact Len Chacal at info@xj4ever.com for parts ( or click on his xj4ever banner at the top of the page) and he'll hook you up.

Don't worry, you're here-- you're in good hands.

Rebuildable? Yes. Worth it? Not until used starters are unobtainable. Do as hogfiddles suggested, and save that one for the far-off future.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

On this note, does that little chunk of damage look preventable? Did I do something wrong to cause that?

I don't think you caused it. Looks to me like a brush broke, got jambed, and the in a subsequent rotation got crushed into the epoxy coating, the coating broke out, and the windings got shorted out big-time. It's an old starter, freak event, but it is also easily fixed-- just get another starter. You'll spend more $ and time trying to repair that one. Keep that one for a spare parts one.. Looks like the housing is still ok....
