Petcock problem?

    i took my petcock off my tank to have the tank painted. While i have been having issues trying to get gas flowing i decided to blow on the nipples of the petcock to see if air blows thru. Air flows nicely thru the big nipple but when i blow on the small nipple no air flow at all. Is this right? I recently rebuilt the petcock im just wondering if i should do it again

    Small nipple is for a vacuum source. When vacuum is present (engine running) it pulls open the internal fuel valve. This allows fuel to flow from tank to carbs.

    If you were able to blow through the small barb, then the rubber diaphram is compromised. That would allow fuel to be sucked in by vacuum and not through the carbs.

    And if you suck lightly on the small nipple ( there ya go, Matti), you can "feel" the diaphragm/spring do it's thing. BUT if you do it too hard, you can rupture the diaphragm, too, so be careful. If air keeps drawing through like sucking on a straw, the diaphragm is already compromised.

    just don't bite the petcocks small nipple to hard while you suck on it you may get slapped
