I have a 1982 XJ750 Maxim and I want to change the handlebars to drag bars. I would like to do this without chopping up the bike, i.e., not cutting the stock bars. I read that it is possible to put XS 650 clamps in the triple trees, but that requires making the holes larger. Clamp-on superbike bars had crossed my mind, therefore if anyone knows the width of the forks and bars (where the controls attach to) that would also be greatly appreciated. I do feel that a straight drag bar would be the best way to go. Thank you.

i have the same bike and put risers, handlebar clamps, from a 650 Seca on it
no drilling involved, just some spacers to lift them another 1/2 inch
i'am not sure straight bars clear the tank though

I have a top tree from a xs on mine, they raised about an inch due to the risers.

I put drag bars on my 82 maxim, they did not give me hardly any clearance to turn, however I used the rubber spacers that were origanally on the bottom of the handlebar clamps and put them on the top and it gave me enough clearance for the tank.
