The fancy new term for it is the VIN.
Shorty is in the engine case above the clutch cover. Long form is stamped on the right side of the headstock, and stickered on the right side.

And now we're down to the last 6 positions of the full VIN, and this is the unique, sequential "serial number" of each individual bike. Your own bike has a serial number that is different than every other one ever produced for your model and year bike.

For various reasons, Yamaha assigned a range of serial numbers for each bike year and model, and these numbers did not normally start with the number "000001". The starting point for each serial number differs by year and model. For the 1981 XJ650 Maxim used in this example, the serial number range starts with serial number "100101". Each subsequent 1981 XJ650 Maxim model 4H7 destined for the US marketplace got the next higher serial number, thus the second bike off the assembly line was #100102, etc.

Let's pretend that this was the 1,356th 1981 XJ650 Maxim destined for the US marketplace. So starting with the 100101 number, we add 1,356 to it, and get: 101456 ( = 1,356 + 100,100). Note that since the first unit of production was #100101, you "start counting" at 100,100 rather than at 100,101.

So our final VIN for this particular bike is:

    JYA4H7006BA101457"

Are you talking just your particular model, or are you talking who's got the lowest serial number period? I don't know my 700's off the top of my head, but I have :
    1980 xj650 maxim - serial number is 347 I think.....IIRC, whatever the case, it's an early first-year one

    and then there's my 900rk:

    Serial # 17 :)

Yup, the red one in the showcase

The rear fender is a Harley bobtail fender that I modified to fit/work.

The 900rk has an interesting history in the USA. First, though, it was made for a few years, then became the Diversion and went a little different route, but the long and short of it is that there were a pretty good amount of them made.

HOWEVER, in the USA.......shortly after their introduction, Harley Davidson convinced the Gov't to put a pretty stiff tariff on anything imported over 700cc. So, these really kind of stopped coming in pretty quickly. It's estimated that they were imported for only a few months before stopping, and in that time somewhere around 1000 or so came in.

There are currently about 80 that are registered on the database, though I know there are more out there yet. Even if half of them still exist, that still puts in to only several hundred still around. My totally un-official guess would be that may 25% of them are still around? Who knows for sure.............

Anyway, mine is the 17th unit built.....its unrestored, and is ridden..

So there's a very brief history lesson for you............

Hey guys, first posting/reply and I'm really not trying to hyjack the thread. I see the serial # explanation, but I don't see the production quantity. Where can the total production quantity be found of a particular bike? I've seen nothing on how many were actually made and shipped to ?

I've a 1981 XJ650LH Midnight Maxim which hasn't run in 5 years, I'm bringing her back to life, all this talk about serial #'s has me wondering total quantity. I've never seen another 650 Midnight Maxim in real life, anyone have any idea or know where to find this info?

    Cheers!

My 85 xj700n vin ends in 001215. So I guess I have the 1215th bike. After reading k-moe's explanation I cna only assume since I don't know if they started with 000001 or not. But hey, my bike runs really well so I don't really care.

So my 650 is 026493. Do you think maybe it started at 020001?
