hey All...I guess I am getting old. I put the only key I had down and now it's gone.

    It's for a 1982 Seca Turbo. I should have made copies...but I didn't. My bad.

Just checked the locks.. no key number etched anyplace.

    Please help..I can't ride!!

    Thanks,

    Rick

no it isn't, it's right where you put it.
I think the # is on the bottom of the ignition switch

    More info.
Just removed the ignition switch no numbers except:

    E7 9091 203

    Any help?

Just received an email from a key vendor. The E7 9091 MAY be a key number, but the 203 is throwing them off.

It's stamped in exactly like this:

    E7 9091 203

Anyone have any idea if the 203 means something else?

Last three digit are totally useless for copy making meanings. THe Letter and the five following digits are the ones that count.

So, the extra 203 (or three other digits) appear on all of the stampings on the back of the lock cylinders?

I have to order a cut key and want to maximize the chances it will be the correct one!

    Thanks!!

    Rick

If you can't get a key made from the code you can take the igniton lock in and have a key made from it. The locksmith will disassemble the cylinder and cut a key to match the wafers (this usually costs quite a bit more than just cutting from a code). If that isn't an option you should be able to snag an entire lockeset with keys on Ebay. I'm pretty sure that if you can't find a set form a Turbo you can swap the cylinders from any XJ lockset into your locks.

I had a look at one of my keys and the only digits I saw where the letter and the first five numbers.

The code I have is NOT on the key (I don't have one to look at!) it's on the back of the ignition switch assembly. The metal box on the back has a stamping on it. I am trying to figure out if any of them will have three extra digits in addition to the key code. If they do I can simply have a key made and I'm all set. If not I have to keep looking.

Iif you have an ignition switch removed from your bike (or a spare), should be simple to look at the back and check.

    THANKS!

    Rick

The key codes (to my knowledge) were not normally released by Yamaha. As I mentioned before you'll need to find a locksmith that has access to the Yamaha Key codes from that era, or find an older Yamaha dealer that still has the books. As Quebocois mentioned, the letter is the key blank type, and the first five numbers is the key code. IIRC the remaining three identify which model bike the locksets go to.

I know exactly what you mean, I have a picture in my files of the bottom of another switch and I can see the same pattern (not the same digits of course), a letter with five numbers and then three other numbers, separated from the first ones. I had a similar problem two years ago (I dropped my keys in the snow and the snow blower blew them away, then I called a locksmith and I seem to remember he told me the last three digits aren't important. But sometimes my memory isn't that good...

Key Ordered. Now (as long as it works) I am searching for an OEM 1982 Plastic key blank. (or maybe a few!)

    Thanks,

    Rick

Cool. Now I can make keys and pick myself up some free bikes ;)

Now that this is solved you might want to nix the actual numbers and photos from your posts. In the future that sort of thing is probably best handled via a private conversation.

Maybe Blackice could erase the whole thread or the sensible information? I was able to erase the picture of the key but I can't erase the picture of the switch...

Best send a request to Snosherrif then. Thankfully the odds of this being a problem for either of you are low.
