Is this normal? Only happens at higher RPMs, feels like it rapidly hits the top of my shoe a few times. Also intermittently the gear changes into other gears feels stiff and with a metal on metal grind.. Clutch lever has a couple mm of play (feels like very little).

    Bike is a 1982 XJ650 Maxim.

    Cheers!

Have you tried adjusting the cable to see if you can adjust it out. Also how good is your clutch stack? Next time you're doing an oil change it pays to have a look at the condition of the driving and driven plates to make sure you're getting good separation/disengagement on the pull of the clutch. Otherwise your getting into shift drum, selector forks and worn cogs - the stuff on the inside that gets exe!!
