I have a 1981 XJ650 and just received a set of brand new aftermarket mirrors that I purchased from an on-line source. Much to my disappointment, the right side mirror of the newly purchased set has a left hand thread on the bottom where it mounts to the brake lever assembly whereas the OEM mirror on that side has a right hand thread. Moreover, the screw threads that mount the OEM mirrors on my bike are right hand threads on both sides. Has anyone else encountered this issue as well? Do mirrors sets typically come with one side having a left hand thread? Needless to say, I need to return what I purchase as it's a no go. Can someone point me to a product that includes right hand threads on both mirrors? Thank you in advance.

Your right-hand mirror is a reverse-thread. Anything else is definitely NOT stock or OEM. Even if its reverse, that doesn't mean it's stock because there are aftermarket parts available. But in any case, your right-hand mirror mount and stem were originally reverse-thread from the factory.

That way, heaven-forbid, if you should hit anything with the mirrors, either mirror would be more likely to swing away as it loosens rather than tighten more and snap off.

Standard Yamaha fair for the early eighties on almost all bikes was a left hand thread on the RHS.

So if he has the left hand thread on his right side mirror, but it doesn't fit his right side mount, does that mean he has the wrong mount? I feel like Hogfiddles already answered this, but I didn't understand... Is the mirror wrong, or the mount? I is confused.

On my bike, the right mirror screws into a tapped hole in the master cylinder casting. This tapped hole is an M10 with a right hand thread.
There is no evidence that it was ever modified in any way. It's possible that the master cylinder casting is an aftermarket part, but why would
they deviate from the OEM design if it had a left hand thread? That's a rhetorical question.
The master cylinder reservoir cover is OEM with the Yamah logo embossed on it which leads me to believe that the rest of this assembly is OEM as well.
I read other Yamaha owner's same complaints elsewhere on the internet. They speculated that only Yamaha used right hand threaded mirrors on both sides.
Is it possible that they did this for a short time then switched to left hand thread on the right?

Once again.... Your right-hand mirror is SUPPOSED TO BE REVERSE-THREAD. If it, or the mount, is not.... Then they have been changed.

While Yamaha used a LHT on the right mirror stalk, almost every other manufacturer used a RHT. Hogfiddles speaks the truth. Your master cylinder is either not a Yamaha part, or the threads were drilled out and retapped for a RHT.

The nice thing about the adapters that Bensalf linked is that they set your mirriors just a bit wider/taller and give you a better view.
