Noise at certain speed

    Finally got my Bike on the road and took a ride around town to check it out. Noticed at 40-45 mph there is a high pitched whine. Above it goes away and below that it's not there either. It has good power and I didn't notice any vibration just a whine

    The whine is normal. It's a part of the xj majic.

    I always thought the whine came from the final drive. I don't think the chain drive 550's make that sound.

    My 85 xj700n does the same thing and has the entire time I've owned it. I asked the same question and got the same answer--3 or 4 years ago. To me it really sounds good when the whining fades out.

    Love the whistle/whine/whatever you want to call it. Some say its the stator whistle, some say its the middle gear whine, some say the rear gear.

    I don't believe it's the rear or the middle gear.... It whines with revs and in neutral so it seems it can't be gear related. Whatever it is, though, dang I love that sound!!!!

    Isn't that gear a straight cut gear like an old Muncie 4speed has that whine.
