Got around to popping out the shims... here's what I have.
The shim on intake #2 I could find no markings for, but came out to 2.80mm when measured (so this is a y-280 shim yes?). Likewise #3 intake was veeeery faded but pretty sure it said 290 and when measured came to 2.90mm
    intake #2...[IMG]

    As for shims needed:
meaning... need to replace with 260 on exhaust #1
    275 on intake 1
    exhaust 2 is good
    275 on intake 2
    250 on exhaust 3
    285 on intake 3
    255 on exhaust 4
    intake 4 is good.

    Sound right?

your caliper is not intended to measure a shim in the middle of the shim its good measuring field is at the tips where the fingers are ground down measure the edges for better accuracy.

I agree. I did remeasure all the others and they did match up however. Ie. y-265 = 2.65mm etc.

If you want to get really anal you will notice that a fist full of 265's (or whatever size) measured with a micrometer are not all the same size.
I have personally 'gone this far' last time I adjusted my valves.

Mr. Dawson, where in the great state of cheese are you from?

Thankfully the shims are harder than the cam lobes, so they will remain flat essentially forever. Measuring with a caliper is more than sufficient to figure the size of a shim.

Agreed. I assume Chacal is the man to be in touch with regarding shims?

Chacal or member Hogfiddles (he runs a shim pool). He'll probably chime in and give you the details. Hope this helps.

Except for us anal retentive over-thinkers!

Eau Claire - I'm gonna be relocating just south of Tomahawk later this year, we will almost be neighbors. Would love to meet up and do a ride into the driftless area - watch for a post in the Central US and Canada area next spring.
