yes it is still very active
did you do a bench synch on the carbs it is a simple process.
there is also a few threads on making a carb sync tool for less than 10.00

have you cleaned or rebuilt your carbs?
did you set the pilot/idle mixture screws to 2-1/2 turns out from lightly seated?

air pods and stright pipes i see this is going to make things harder for you, there is a thread in the mods forum about people who have had success on doing this you should read that thread.
have you done a compression test on the motor, and checked your valve clearances?
these are things you need to do to help get your diaginosis.

Do all 4 have to be done at one time? The guy I got it from had parts to put back together the carbs. Unsure whether they were knew or not. I will set again at that right now and try

Compression seems good. I've riden it twice around my neighbor. Pulled like crazy. I think more than my 929rr I traded for it. Yea pods and straight, freaking loud

what you do for a bench sync is use the idle adjuster knob to open buttery flies, use a tiny drill bit #60 to #80 or piece of wire or a strip of bussniess card.
slip it into carb 3 (from left to right) then back off the Idle knob untill you feel it drag, then on carb 4 turn adjuster screw on throttle shaft to open butter fly insert objec into that carb and adjust to the same drag. then do carb #1 to carb # 2 in the same fastion. the final step is doing carb set 1&2 to carb set 3&4 then all will be set to same position.

That's the problem it's hard to get started. Takes bout an hour to get started. Once the motor is warm it usually fires. Cold start is no go lol. Plus the person rigged up starting on this. Has toggle switch, pull switch and then you push the push button

if MIKUNI here is a rebuild pdf it is good reading
    http://www.mtsac.edu/~cliff/storage/gs/Mikuni_BS-CV_Carburetor_Rebuild_Tutorial.pdf

there is also a Hitachi link some where here
I will tell you now if carbs are not clean inside you will have a hard time and progressivly harder time starting bike.

we have a few carb experts here but probaly at work or out riding you will be hearing from them with better advice than I can give you,

sounds like you have an issue with your enrichment circuit (choke) in the carbs
motor starts on the enrichment circuit then pilot circuit takes over for the first 2k or so rpm then the main jets kick in.

link of the inside of your carbs will show you things
    http://www.xj4ever.com/inside your carbs.pdf

you will also want to visit this link

    many good carb threads

also add your full bike type to your profile it will help us all. i gotta go its riding time

Hitachi carbs. I'm taking them off and doing the bench sync as you suggested. Sorry for the double post

    Back to the original question:

Have the carbs been CLEANED THOROUGHLY??

Since you have pods, has it been re-jetted?

Have your valve clearances been adjusted to be in spec?

Cleaned yes. As far as jets I don't know if they have been or not. Carbs were in pieces when I got it. So had to put together with kit he had. And I haven't messed with the valves

EXACTLY HOW did you clean your carbs?

When carbs are CLEAN, and valves are in spec, the bike should start up at the touch of the button. Heck, when the carbs are spot-on, it should start almost instantly even if the valves aren't dead-on in-spec. My 700 is waaay overdue for a check, and it starts instantly any time every time.

Nothin sweeter than a finely tuned XJ bike. Set the choke and just bump the start switch, let it warm up and hit the road.
Check your valves, pull the carbs, bench sync and wet set your floats. And while you have the float bowls off clean those enrichment jets out in the bottom of the float bowls. If its tuned right it should pop right off and run on all 4 evenly.

See that Hoggfiddles guy above? He's the man. Listen to him, have happy mo-bike!
He comes off as a bit cranky, but it's only cuz he's mastered the carb cleaning job, and everyone else is in Kindergarten. He just wants us to catch up.

Those extra tubes are overflow tubes. So, most likely you have a float sticking open

I am about to start chopping my yamaha xj700 maxim. My plans are to lower it (maybe struts), cut the fender off, new seat and bars, and make it sound loud. Any thoughts or suggestions. I don't really know where to start.
