....recently replaced stock tire and rim with a little fatty..now I'm unable to use the castle nut. will i be in trouble if i don't correct this ..right hand side with pinch bolt has plenty of bar left over {where pinch bolt connects}..how can i extend or regain access to same as stock length as before?...was not easy to stuff tire in there ..involved loosening drive line and reattaching with tire ..and with shocks off ...

so you have a wider rim at the axel hub on the bike ?
the axel is a rod with a set of spacers in itif you change the width of the rim where the axel goes through it you will need to change the spacers.
when you tighten the axel you are torcing the nut against the spacers

What rim and tire did you use? Sounds like something amiss with install. Send us a pic of both sides of wheel/ swing arm !! And one straight on from rear.

If the rim hub isn't the same width as the original then you will have a very unsafe machine. You can't just swap whatever rim you like the looks of and have it work. You can't even do that on a car.

i assume you are talking front tire becase you say pinch bolt. everything on the axle is part of the spacing speedo hub then part 2,3,14,17 are all spacers as well as the rim itself and the centers of the bearings
plain and simple your rim is too wide.

    parts link
    https://www.shopyamaha.com/parts-ca...lernumber=#/Yamaha/XJ650RJ_-_1982/FRONT_WHEEL

    and this is rear wheel
    https://www.shopyamaha.com/parts-ca...(1982_MOTORCYCLE)/REAR_WHEEL_(XJ650RJ_-_1982)

everything between the forks and final nut including forks act as spacers.
    same with the rear wheel

There is a pinch bolt on the rear too. He mentioned loosening the drive line to install the wheel.
Sure would be nice to know which shaft driven XJ he has.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and venture a guess that 82650secamuffins has an 82 seca 650. Just a hunch. Or they bake really weird muffins.
    Am I correct, @82650secamuffins ?

Could be. Of course people have been known to own more than one XJ.
