only in 'merica, don't be surprised if you get sued for leaving such a unfit dangerous (bald back tire, out of date brake lines)machine out where (slimeballs client) would have a overwhelming temptation to go for a joy ride. When this fine young man realised he was on a death trap, he was attacked by local, good old boy,law enforcement and viciously chased until he crashed to avoid a old lady crossing the road.
Did you leave a helmet with the bike.......contributory negligence

So very true and so very difficult to keep at the front of my mind . . .

Polock - unfortunately your statement holds truth also, I'm going to cancel your thought and remove it from the universe so that Razz doesn't get challenged anymore then he has been already.

I don't think the thief would have a leg to stand on in court trying to go after the owner of a stolen bike for damages. If he did try such a outrageous thing I would be the first inline to donate money for the defense. If anything Razz should bring a lawsuit for damages, just to make sure the guy will always have a judgement hanging over him.
No doubt the low life has no money and is in the hospital on tax payer dollars.

He could only potentially be sued by the guy if this all happened on his property. There's a thing called "reasonable expectation of care" that as an unwelcomed thief he would be entitled to very little of. If he had stolen the bike and ridden it into a camouflaged, spike-filled pit that Razz had dug, then maaaybe he could recover damages for injuries sustained that way, since it's reasonable to expect that his yard wouldn't be booby-trapped like that.

This guy doesn't have a leg to stand on.

Yes I have a mig and is pretty reasonable with it. I might just weld a loop and do a cafe style tail, since I am a one up rider. Which means I can reuse what is left of the seat, Haven't decided yet.

I love the camouflaged spike filled pit idea! But my C4 and napalm would be more satisfying. No escape and burned beyond recognition!

    Razz,
I'm glad you were able to recover your bike. Hopefully with the aid of this site and some help from others you can make it like new again. Very unfortunate thing it was and as far as I'm concerned they simply had no right.

Razz... I have a title-less frame that could be a donor for the missing section (of COURSE I'd have something like that, right???). I'd need to know where to hacksaw it apart for you-----

I just don't understand how/why they managed to do that much in such a short amount of time. Wasn't the bike only missing for like a week? I can't even clean the cat vomit off the basement floor in that much time. Ask my wife!

If thats all they have to do we saw the post on the 2nd and then the results on Friday the 11th 10 days of dipsticks hacking on it
and then to fry the back tire off and crash it on top of all that.
Just think if they were to put all that energy into being a productive member of society rather than being burr under everyones saddle.

they need to come up with a low-jack device for motorcycles......something with a small footprint that would be undetectable for awhile......not sure if that is possible......

But cost to purchase would probably make it cost-prohibitive

It begs the question, does this guy that took the bike have a pal with a crashed Maxim and they did a chassis swap all the good parts and someone now riding a nice shiny bike that was a wreck. 10 days is plenty of time for a couple of clowns to swap all the good parts. I bet the farm that if you gave any 2 of us just 48 hours it would be a cake walk! And Dave Fox could do it in 24

No..... I have turned every nut on this bike. I can tell you that every part on here is my original parts. When they found the property where the bike was. They found up to 120 bikes in a pit. All stolen, rode hard till they wouldn't work any more, then dumped in to the pit. Cheap thrills.

    I ordered the following today:
Yamaha Maxim XJ750 XJ 750 Y466. lock set with key ignition switch gas cap seat latch $31.49
Yamaha 1982 XJ750 XJ Maxim 750 rear Rim Wheel $42.75
Yamaha 1982 XJ750 XJ Maxim 750 left Seat Latch Lock Mechanism $9.99
Yamaha XJ750 XJ 750 Maxim Chrome Rear Fender, Plastic Inner Fender $4.99
(don't ask me why these are hyper links)

That will be it till more funds come in. Luckily my carburetor side job is starting to pick up. I had a Honda vtx1300 dropped off today, and I am expecting a '85 Magna that will popping in soon. @ $40 per carb it adds up quick. Then I have this to finish up. 20150915_000811.jpg
And the carb job on the bench. So the money is coming. Going to take time.

$40 per carb plus parts $100 extra if I have to pull them. The reason I keep it so low is there is 2 other shops in town and I have absolutely no overhead. It also keep them knocking at my door. I made a promise to my wife, that when I got the xj I would not use any of the "House" money, other than gas and insurance. So far 7 years later I have keeped my word, by doing these side jobs. I am pretty good at it too, I can take an engine and clean the carbs, all you have to do is tickle the start button and it will start, some times better than a FI engine. My girl after all that she has been through this last week started with out a whimper, and talk about a smile on my face.

    Hey Razz,
My son was watching your video and he noticed you said the thieves had the keys but still punched the ignition switch and gas tank locks out. He was wondering how did they get ahold of your keys? I told him that is a good question.

Thats the arse kicker. I thought i explained it but I see that I didn't. I was tinkering with her the night before, when I saw a group of kids park behind a building across the street and took of running. I called the law. After being involved with all of that I walked inside and left my keys in the ignition. Never the less they shouldn't be on my property to even see the keys. The police figured keys or not they came on my property with the intent to steal my bike.

$40 seems like a pretty sweet deal. You should be plenty busy.

One thing I have quickly noticed, being new to the site, is how much folks are willing to help out and share their knowledge. Very cool.

Well if they wanted it a set of keys wouldn't have stopped them anyway. They would have rolled to somewhere they could punch the ignition switch and away they would have went.

In any case I have a headlight bucket and some other stuff. Just let us know what else you are looking for after you get what Hogfiddles sends you.

    Razz,

I know you know what you're doing but you might want to go ahead and compression test the mill since they smoked the rear tire. Just a thought.

    Al ready done;
    1}150
    2}150
    3}147 (probably a valve)
    4}149 (ditto)
According to my log book (yes i am anal about this bike) the compression has not change.
Also bore scoped, no noticeable scoring of the cylinder walls, and no burning of the pistons. It is hard to detect any rod knock due to the open exhaust. I really do be-leave these beast are bullet proof.
