I have a really weird issue with my turn signals on my 1982 Yamaha maxim XJ650

The turn signal light flashes only last 14-15 seconds. Sometimes the left one will last until I cancel it, sometimes it doesn't, the right one stops after 14-15 without fail! WEIRD!

I tried opening up the compartment, see if there anything out of the ordinary, cleaned a bit, re-tighten a bit, re-assembled, same issue... :-(

If anyone has any advice or input, I would eternally grateful!

    thank you in advance!

    Seb

That bike should have a self cancelling unit. I don't have the specifics but the FSM has testing procedures. Sounds like there may be an issue in the switch itself, I believe there is a separate set of contacts in there for the cancelling unit and the lights themselves.

IIRC, should be able to unplug it and see if lights work normally.

Thanks for replies guys!! I forgot to add one more thing I noticed: problem isn't there if the motorcycle isn't running, meaning its just "on" and i dont start it, there are no issues!

I dont know if that simplifies things or makes them worst in identifying the problem lol.

The self-canceling unit only comes into play when the signals are flashing as the bike is in motion. If you turn them on while at rest they will flash until manually canceled, or until the bike has rolled for approximately 210 (?) feet.

In addition to unpluging the self-canceling unit (under the gas tank. you'll need to pull the tank off to access it) you should also remove the cover from the turn signal relay and clean any corrosion from the contacts. Corroded contacts can cause the turn signals to self-cancel (even without a self-canceling unit being in the circuit).

My bike has no issues either when it is in the shed and not running.
