Hello, I've been reading posts for awhile, and have already learned a lot. I've recently picked up an 82 XJ750 Maxim and an 85 750 MaximX. The 85 has a blown engine and no title, but the 82 is decent. The plan is to spend some time with my 20 year old son turning the 82 into a ratty bobber, possibly using some of the parts from the 85. I hope to pass on a little mechanical skill to my son before he's off on his own for good. I hope to pick your brains for alot of your knowledge and experience to avoid some mistakes. I'll post some pictures when I figure that out. Thanks.

First of all, welcome to the board. There are many people here that appreciate a stock bike, so if it is truly "decent", it may be better to keep it stock. Its your bike so do what you want with it.

If you're looking to pass on some knowledge, my opinion would be to pass on some knowledge on how to maintain an engine in stock form. These engines run extremely well in stock form, the airbox and exhaust was designed with consistent output throughout the RPM range and changing them usually results in tuning nightmares. Things like properly cleaning a carb, wet setting fuel levels, etc. are skills worth having down the road.

I agree, they are very nice stock. This 82 however was the start of a project, the frame under the seat had already be removed. Maybe "decent" wasn't 100% accurate.

Lol. Yeah if it's been hacked already go for it. Mine was complete down to the toolbag, so I couldn't bring myself to bob.

Somewhere there is a post or three about sucessfuly making a better looking airbox. I recall that it worked almost as well as the stock aribox, and was easier to jet for than pods. Should have been posted sometime in 2012.

I do have the airbox, the lid/snorkel was gone but I found one on Ebay. Thanks, I'll search for that post.
