I am new to the forum I have owned 3 XJ bikes a 650 Maxim, 700x Maxim and I just bought a 1982 550 Maxim. The 650 I bought new the first year they made them the 700 I bought as used I no longer own either of these bikes. The 550 was a barn find it has just under 6000 miles on it. My plan is to bring it back to life.

Welcome aboard. These guys are a great help. Although, the 'for sale' category can get caustic. Between knowledgeable members and Chacal (Evrything XJ) they were able to get my bike running and I'm no mechanic.

I pulled the head off and put some diesel fuel additive in each cylinder and let set for a couple of days.

They are stuck, but they will clean up. Instead of the diesel additive use a 50/50 mix of acetone and automatic transmission fluid.

    Only when a first-post is a for-sale post.

And even then, it usually only when the first-poster either 1) won't answer questions, or 2) tells US that we are asking inappropriate questions, or ) starts arguing with us, or 4) starts name-calling, etc.....

Good clarification as to root cause ..... but none the less can (not always) get caustic.

There appears to be sawdust (???) all over the piston and engine?
