Are they new or used? Im not positive but both bikes should use 11.5" shocks. The 750 was probably valved a bit heavier but if they're used shocks, they're junk...at now 30+ years old, new ones will be the way to go. To answer your question in regards to its good upgrade; if the 550 shocks didn't work at all, broken, like one or both is missing and the 750 shocks had some stroke left in it and you had to have it, I suppose, maybe. New shocks are the way to go at this point if you're going to ride it.

If they aren't leaking oil then they will function as good as new. Mileage wears shocks out far sooner than age does.

To a point, but lets not kid ourselves...these KYB units were not the pinnacle of rear shocks by any stretch of the imagination. But if they are't leaking and the ride isn't jarring, they will work and be totally fine.

preset depends on your weight and if you plan on carrying a load and/or a passenger set them for the middle setting to start

Solo rider around 200 pounds, no luggage; set spring preload on 2 and rebound damping at 2 for your baseline. Adjust as needed from there.

I'm not. I assume that he's not going racing.
I'm also assuming that he's a cheap bastard like me :)
