A couple recent threads referenced how much (or little) people have paid for their bikes.
    So let's find out more . . . .

I got mine for a $100 bottle of Irish Whiskey and a Thai dinner for 4.
PO was a boss of mine . . . I must have been a real good worker!

Apologies to our international crowd . . . poll is in US $.

I can answer in two categories above. one was $800 and the other was $400. of course I have spent way more than that on both of them.

My first and only bike was given to me by my dad who bought it secondhand and rode it for a few years. Instead of trading it for his Harley he gave it to me. It needed more work than I could afford at the time and after storing it for a few seven or so years I gave it to a buddy who I thought would do something with it when we moved. I called my buddy after about 8 years or so and found he rolled it into his shop and that's where it sat. I recently drove the 7 hours back to Birmingham and he gave it back. So, technically, I've received the same bike for free twice! It is currently in pieces in my garage getting a complete overhaul. New seals, bearing, brakes, brake lines, MC rebuilt, carbs getting cleaned, Valves getting checked and new tires. Not to mention a few other odds and end that are getting replaced as they get cleaned and inspected. Also new paint from the frame up.

I was thinking that may be a new poll question.
I have most of my receipts in the same place, put in at least the obligatory $800+.

$1500 for the 750 maxim, 10,000 original miles. Put $ 1500 more into it to make everything like new. $2500 for the 81 750 seca Owned by a professional motorcycle racer of the 70's era. only 8,000 miles on it. He maintained it.

My '82 seca 750 was "purchased" for the cost of two cups of coffee (but it was Tim Horton's... Canadian equivalent of crack!) One cup for the guy with the van, one for the bike owner. Plus I got them to load it for me! I don't know what the American dollar was at compared to ours, but I think I spent $3.60 total. I fully expect to make up the savings with a healthy bill at Chacal's!!

Initial buy in was $70 last January. I think I am into the bike for about $650 so far considering buying a replacement engine, some spare parts, some XJ4Ever parts and misc shop accessories. Still haven't worked out all the kinks with the carbs, but I haven't touched the bike since before xmas due to family and work obligations.

I got my Seca and the back half of a craftsman lawn mower bagger for $400, delivered from a couple towns over. Ran rough but needed tons of work.
I got my Turbo Seca for $250 delivered from 1/4 of the way around 495 (around Boston). It had the wheels, engine, steering, and turbo on the frame, but the rest of it was in boxes and it hadn't run in 20 years.

I probably spent more in moving them and storing them over the last 6 years, and I definitely spent much more taking them down to the frame and restoring them to a reliable riding condition.

Paid $850 CAD in 1987 for an XJ550 with 4,200 km on it (2,650 miles). Spent about 3x that over the last 28 years on it. Now has 83,000 km (52,000 miles).

Paid 200 UK Pounds ($300) for a 1992 XJ900F with 108K miles, and glad to get it so cheap, even with that mileage. I already knew these bikes will do starship mileage with regular oil changes and if not thrashed every time they're started up. It was really well looked after by the PO, who'd had it since '97 or so. Not long after getting it, the front tyre and mufflers needed done, but that's just the cost of ownership, so no biggie.
Only fly in the ointment was the cost of transportation - from the seller's house to mine cost me nearly as much as the bike.

I traded a kayak for my 81 550 seca.. I had about 800 into the kayak, and about 100 in gear that went with it (that I got for free). So 900 trade value.

$900 for mine. I overpaid, but there weren't any others on the market here at the time, and $900 was a cheap price to pay for a motorcycle that I've wanted since 1981.

Paid 600 CAN$ for my 1983 Seca900. I had to replace a tire, to rebuild the brakes, change fork seals, change the valve cover gasket and donuts, and fix a few body parts. The engine has pretty good compression numbers, so I figure 80 000 km is just a good start. I bought another one for parts for 275 CAN$ . That one was a pretty good deal, I guess, even with compression numbers are a litlle bit lower. front.JPG $_20.JPG

    Long story..

When my Dad was in college (early 70's) he saw a '69 Honda CB160 parked by his dorm. Weeks later, it was still sitting there. He was able to claim it and get an abandoned title. Bike runs, 100% complete. He rode it all through college.

A few years later, my Dad found a '71 Honda CB450 in a box at a yard sale for $100. He put it back together, it's also 100% complete, but it won't shift past 2nd gear. Many rebuilds and mechanics later, same problem. He gave up on it.

Both bikes were parked in our garage my entire childhood. When my parents sold the house, my Dad didn't take the Hondas with him, so I took them with me. After 13 years, I never did get around to doing anything with them, and it was sad seeing them just sitting, so I decided to sell or trade them to someone who could bring them back to life.

I ended up trading both Hondas for my '80 XJ650, from the original owner with only 6454 miles on it, in 2012. It needed some love too, but ran and drove ok. Since then, I've put 7000 miles on it, able to ride it the whole time I've been fixing it up.

So that's how I got my XJ for 'free'.

But, considering the sentimental value, monetary value, and moving and storing the Hondas for so many years, I really paid quite a lot for my XJ. Of course that doesn't include the money I've spent fixing it up. I don't even want to add that up, with parts and accessories it's well over $1000. And of course, I'm not done putting money into it! I really love my XJ though. I knew from the first dusty barn pic that this was my bike, and I couldn't be happier with it.

Paid $900 for my XJ750 Maxim with a windshield just last August. It needs a good carb cleaning, and I'll be swapping break lines for steel braided ones. However, other than that it is in good shape. Not a steal, but pretty reasonable for this area.

OK.. Found them.. VERY nice. Those tank scoops are hard to find. I need someone who has a 3d printer.. that, or I'm going to attempt to fab some up somehow. Belly pans are not stock in US too. I would really like the Euro set up, with fixed fairing and belly pan. I think they look awesome. :)

Fixed shorty fairings and belly pans are available on ebay Europe sites, ebay.co.uk and ebay.de in particular. For some reason, the XJ900F was very popular in Germany, and there's no shortage of parts. There's a Facebook group run by an XJ specialist and he's always got a barnful of stuff available. The European pre-Divvy XJ600 and XJ900 shared the same fairing, fyi.

Got my first 1982 XJ650 RK for Au $1012.00 in January 2012
6 months later purchased 2 parts bikes for Au $700.00, 1 x 1980 XJ650 with a blown engine and an 1983 XJ650 with front end damage and a bent frame, swapped the 83 engine into the 80 frame and have been riding it ever since.
In mid 2013 while searching for something with larger engine capacity, I got a 1983 XJ900 "doer upper" for Au$624.00 and a few months later found a 1985 XJ900 in pieces for $350.00,
Then in September 2014 got a second 1985 XJ900 for Au $500.00 complete and running.

I was given an 85 XJ700X from an friends dad. Probably because he felt sorry for me, as my car had just burned up on the side of the freeway in Flagstaff, AZ AND the "quick I need wheels" purchase was going to be more work than planned (isn't it always?!)

Canadian $, bikes I've purchased in the past year:

1985 xj750 maxim $250 - needed tires and the front caliper rebuilt. I sold it for $2200 after riding it for most of the summer.

1984 xj750 Seca $120 - complete bike I'm planning on using it for parts.

1982 xj750 Maxim $0 - my dentist thought it would be funny to give me a new toothbrush, dental floss and the keys to his Maxim. This will be my street ride for 2016, if I can pry myself away from restoring my motocross bikes..

    1982 xj650 Maxim $200. Running

    1985 xv 1000 $200. Running

There are more (non-XJ), so I'll stop there.

Bought my 82 XJ550R Seca for $250. Coolest thing about it was I bought it off the original owner, who was right around my age (19) when he bought it from the dealership back in the early eighties. He put 48'000km (30k miles) on the bike then life got in the way and it sat parked in his garage since 1991. He told me all the cool memories he made while riding the bike, how fast he got it up to, how he beat cb750's in drag races - all the good stuff... and now I'm able to make memories like that all over for as long as I'm riding this bike.

Also I had the bike running within a day of owning it, sent a video to the previous owner and he was astounding that it started. Guess he forgot it was a Yamaha.
