I've decided to paint my bike, and so I'm doing a little side cover repair. One is cracked, and I wanted to see if anyone had any tips, tricks, or ideas on repairing that. Also, the rubber rings on the attachment posts for the side covers are all disentegrated on my bike, preventing my side covers from staying tightly attached. Can I purchase new rings somewhere or does anyone have a fix for this?

    Hi MaverickCS,

I had the same problem. I used a two part artist's epoxy called magic sculpt that's really smooth and can be worked and cleaned up with water. Any epoxy would probably work though. I kind of built it up on the back side for some strength. Sanded smooth primed and painted. As far as the rubber I went to ACE and found some that were close and trimmed them down with sharp exacto knife.

I bought a grommet that inserts in the hole at a hardware. I also bought a smaller one that pushes over the nose parts on the opposite side. The hooks on the one side fit snug in the groove of the outer side of the smaller grommet.

Your Yammy dealer should have them - mine did - only a couple of bucks.

My recommendation for the right side is to replace that lower post screw with a large headed bolt and washer. That way it will not be able to come off without a tool. I too have a right side panel that the aluminum is cracked because I hit a pothole and it fell off, and by the time I turned around and got back to it, someone had already run it over.. I used a bolt with a 5mm allen head, since there is a 5mm allen wrench in the toolbag.

Hahahaha...tool bag... Any tool bag that came with my bike disappeared some time over the past 27 years well prior to my purchase of the bike a month ago. Thanks for the ideas guys! I just wish I had a dealership closer than 1 hour and 15 minutes away.

I just today replaced my grommets that i bought at a yamaha dealer, i bought three of them, and it was a grand total of US$3.50 so they are cheap and were rather easy to replace...
